Miss Cannon enjoys Southern hospitality during recent visit

Miss Mary Cannon of Decatur visited Washington Tuesday through Thursday, July 15-17, and enjoyed her stay amidst the Southern hospitality of the Fitzpatrick Hotel.

The great-niece of the late Robert Augustus Chapman, oldest brother of her grandmother, Mera Chapman Neary, Miss Cannon made a pilgrimage to Resthaven Cemetery to the graves of the Robert Chapmans, their children, and some of their grandchildren.

She called on Betty Merritt, the one cousin who still resides in Washington.

Miss Cannon enjoyed renewing acquaintance and "catching up" with Ruth Emerson Harris, her classmate for four years at Tift College in Forsyth.

On Wednesday evening she attended the service at the First Baptist Church, Washington, as guest of Chris Townsend, associate minister, who grew up in Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, Decatur, where Miss Cannon is a member.

She walked by Southern Elegance on West Robert Toombs Avenue, home for a time of Mamie Clair Barnett, a close relative. She remembers numerous visits and great meals which she had there in the past. She had a conversation with the current owner, Jean Davis-Blair, Downtown later.

Miss Cannon was a missionary to Japan for 15 years before retiring in Decatur. She wrote many of the lessons in the Sunday School quarterlies of the Southern Baptist Convention.
