First recipient honored by T.J. & Friends
      Linda Stevens has been selected as the first recipient of cancer relief funds distributed by the T.J. & Friends Foundation, Inc., a new organization dedicated to helping cancer patients in a seven-county area. Mrs. Stevens was diagnosed with cancer in 2007. She and her husband, Gene, have been long-time citizens and active church members in Wilkes County.

Clark's Station Baptist sets homecoming for Sunday, August 10
      Clark's Station Baptist Church near Jackson Crossroads in North Wilkes County will have homecoming on Sunday, August 10. Sunday School begins at 10:30 a.m. and the morning worship and homecoming service at 11:15. Rev. Lem Clark will be the speaker for the morning and evening services. A barbecue lunch will be provided following the morning service.

Post 17 GSP troopers record 18 crashes, no fatalities in July
      State Troopers from the Washington Post of the Georgia State Patrol investigated 18 traffic crashes during the month of July in Wilkes County. Sergeant First Class Andrews said the traffic crashes resulted in 17 injuries. There were no fatalities.

Sixth graders reminded of needs, concerns at W-WMS
      A new group of sixth graders will report to Washington-Wilkes Middle School for the first day of school on August 8 and the school welcomes them and the opportunity to continue their education. A few of those upcoming sixth graders visited the school and got a brief tour guided by Principal Bill Pendrey.

'Stepping Up' Bible study to begin August 13
      The First Baptist Church will have a seven-week Bible study using "Stepping Up" by Beth Moore. The study will be held on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m.; and on Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m. The first Wednesday session will be on August 13; and the first Thursday session will be on August 14.

W-W Pre-K is now taking applications for new school year
      The Washington-Wilkes Pre-Kindergarten is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 school year. Children who will be four years old on or before September 1, 2008, are eligible to attend the Washington Wilkes Pre-Kindergarten.

Atkinson receives AF Commendation Medal from 165th
      Tech. Sgt. Jamie Craig Atkinson of Washington has received the Air Force Commendation Medal. He is a member of the 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard and is a supervisor in the 165th Emergency Management Flight, 165th Civil Engineering Squadron.

Firefighters save hay field
      Firefighters put out the last smoldering embers of a hayfield fire Thursday, saving a large part of the field off Scull Shoals Road that owner Billy Chafin said had yet to be cut this year. Fire investigators identified what may have been the source of ignition on a power pole next to a shed, where an electrical short may have sparked the blaze.

      J.W. Boatwright is doing okay at his home after having a heart attack last Sunday night. One artery was 100% blocked and the doctor put a stint in at Athens Regional Medical Center Monday morning. His heart was not damaged, but he is still weak and the next two weeks will be critical until he goes back to the doctor. He is just staying quiet, resting, and on a strict diet.

Lunch and Learn group meets, makes scissors holders
      Seven members of the Lunch and Learn met Wednesday, July 23, at Rayle City Hall. The opening prayer was given by Mildred Sisson. Peggy Echols presented the treasurer's report. A business session was held, and reminiscing. Everyone enjoyed making scissors holders out of potholders, and decorated them with flowers, spools, safety pins, etc.

      We are having revival service at Ebenezer this week. It started Sunday with a great attendance and will last through Wednesday night. I visited Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Dragon in Martinez Saturday. I visited my parents several times last week. On Sunday we celebrated my sister Nan's birthday. She's the baby of the family. She was 56. Sunday August 3, was her actual birthday.

      Water bans may still be in place for many Georgia residents, but they can keep their gardens growing and lawns watered. All it takes is a roof, a gutter, a tank, a little rain and some ingenuity. "In rainwater, we can have a really good solution to our irrigation problem," said Frank Henning, a watershed agent with University of Georgia Cooperative Extension.

      K.J. Allen, new owner of WLOV Radio in Washington, told members of the Washington Rotary Club about the station's new format and programming at their regular Thursday lunch meeting on July 31. State park's pool hours announced, to close next month
      The A. H. Stephens State Park pool will be open during regular hours August 6-9 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and August 10 from 12-5 p.m. After this time the pool will be open during weekends only. The schedule will be August 16 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., August 17 from 12-5 p.m., August 23 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., August 24 from 12-5 p.m., August 30 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Rebecca DeWeese earns Masters at Piedmont College
      Rebecca Lauren DeWeese of Washington-Wilkes has completed degree requirements for a Master of Arts in Education at Piedmont College. While attending Piedmont's Athens campus, Rebecca maintained a 4.0 grade point average. Commencement was held July 26, at Johnny Mize Athletic Center in Demorest on the main campus of Piedmont College.
