The Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Department (WWPRD) has announced the following activities and programs which will be coming up in the next few weeks.

Fun In the Sun 2008 Fun in the Sun 2008 will be an event of Saturday, August 16, and is billed as "a family fun-filled day." The fun will begin in the Liberty Street Park at 12 noon and continue until 4 p.m. There will be free admission for everyone.

"Dad's Grill-Off" will be held during the day. Each dad participating is asked to bring his own grill, grilling tools, meat, and marinating spices. A panel of judges will decide the winner who will receive a prize. Anyone who wishes to participate must call the W-WPRD at 706-678-1454 to sign up.

There will be concessions on sale at the park and a watermelon eating contest for children ages 5-12.

Other activities will include water sprinkler, blow up jumper, sack race, jump rope contest, volleyball, basketball shooting, face painting, and Slip 'n' slide.

Cheerleading 2008

The final day to register for the fall cheerleading program for girls ages 4-12 is August 15. Sessions will be held at the W-WPRD gymnasium, 22 Lexington Avenue.

The fee is $15 for Wilkes County residents and $20 for out-of-county residents. There is also an additional cost for uniforms. The uniforms will be determined by squads and coaches and will be purchased before the season begins. Girls cheer for football and basketball and in the spring competition.

Youth Football

Registration for youth football is now underway with the last day to sign up on August 25. Registration is at the W-WPRD on Lexington Avenue, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday- Friday. A child must be six years old by September 1 or age 13 by October 31 in order to participate.

There are three age divisions for youth football.

Flag Football -- 6 and 7 year olds, $35 fee. All games played at W-PRD field.

Pee Wee -- Boys ages 8, 9, and 10 years old. $47 fee. Games on W-WPRD field.

Junior -- Boys ages 11, 12, and 13 years old. $47 fee. W-WPRD field.

Game nights are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights at W-WPRD stadium.

Fall Soccer

The final deadline for registration is August 15. The registration fee is $35. No late sign-ups will be accepted.

Games will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

There will be five age groups: 5-6 years old; 7-8 years old; 9-11 years old; 12-14 years old; 15-17 years old. Children age 17 must show birth certificate or proof of birth date. Children must be age 5 before October 1, 2008.

Practice will begin the week of August 18.
