New doctor introduces herself
     Dr. Nadine Halliburton-Foster, and young Davony, were guests at the Washington Rotary Club's regular meeting on Thursday, August 14. Having been in Washington for only a few months, Dr. Halliburton-Foster told members about herself, her education, her family, and how she came to practice at MedLink. She explained that although she is board-certified in family practice, her special interest is in OB-GYN and she keeps those skills honed by assisting a doctor friend in South Carolina. Dr. Lester Johnson (left) was program host for the day.

Community blood drive now set for Thursday, Sept. 4 at FUMC
      The quarterly Washington-Wilkes Community Blood Drive sponsored by the Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Shepeard Community Blood Center on Thursday August 7, had to be cancelled midway the drive because of a storm in the area.

Arts and crafts fair set for Labor Day in Crawfordvillle
      The 22nd annual Taliaferro County Arts and Crafts Labor Day Fair will be held in Crawfordville Monday, Labor Day, September 1. Activities get underway at 9 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Admission is free. The center of town will be closed off for the activities. Arts and crafts booths will line both sides of Broad Street and curl around the courthouse.

Church to present Beth Moore study starting Aug. 24
      The First United Methodist Church of Washington will present a seven-week session Beth Moore Bible study entitled "Stepping Up - the Psalms of Ascent" beginning Sunday, August 24. The study will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. and is an in-depth look at Psalms 120-134 which show how participants can voice their own petitions and praises to God.

Laptop given at Fun in the Sun
     Harold Smith (right) was the lucky winner of the Dell laptop computer given away by Aaron's Sales and Lease Ownership, sponsor of the Family Fun in the Sun day held last Saturday to benefit the football program of the Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Department. It was reported that as many as 300 people attended the all-day event held at the Liberty Street playground. Aaron's General Manager Kenneth Johnson (left) and Sales Associate Britany Crews expressed their thanks to all who made donations for the event.

Joseph Baldwin to be recognized as scholarship winner
      Joseph Baldwin of Washington, an upcoming junior vocal performance and choral conducting major at Northwestern University, will be recognized during the August 24 morning worship service at the First Baptist Church as recipient of the First Baptist Church Troupe Harris Scholarship for 2008-2009.

Brown describes FSA functions
     Kyle Brown, Executive Director of the Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Washington, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, August 19. Brown's main focus was a description of the 2008 Farm Bill which funds his agency. He said that the $289 billion 5-year bill provides funding for a number of farm and non-farm activities. It was pointed out that 73%, or $211 billion, was earmarked for the food stamp and school lunch programs, with the remaining $78 billion available for programs of the FSA. Brown described a number of programs of the FSA which included crop insurance, disaster relief, live stock feed, energy conservation, and milk loss among others. He said that the drought monitor index for Wilkes County had been severe, extreme, or exceptional for some time. Kerry McAvoy (left) was the program host for the day.

Piedmont College awards degrees to two from Wilkes Co.
      Two Wilkes County residents were among 441 students who received degrees from Piedmont College at the recent summer commencement ceremonies. Tricia Mathis of Rayle earned a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in early childhood education; and Elizabeth Michelle Smith of Washington earned an Education Specialist (Ed.S) degree.

Photo wins in ASU contest
     Patricia Johnson's photo, "A View Inside University Hall," (above) was selected from among 821 entries as the third place winner in the recent Augusta State University photo competition. It is currently featured on the front page of the ASU website (www.aug.edu) along with the first and second place photos. Johnson reports that the photo has been viewed 1,084 times and that some of her photography will be featured in a gallery at Aroma's Coffee and Wine Bar in Augusta's Surrey Center during the month of September. She is a junior pursuing a nursing degree at ASU and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Johnson of Washington.

Shaneika Mahoney finishes training at Lackland AF Base
     Force Airman Shaneika C. Mahoney has graduated from basic military training at Lackland. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Forcemission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, andreceived physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

Trevor Atkins celebrates third birthday Aug. 17
      Trevor Blaine Atkins, son of Mark and Sherry Atkins of Tignall, celebrated his third birthday on August 17 and was treated to several parties. Trevor celebrated at a pool party and sleepover on August 1 at the home of his grandparents, Kevin and Rachel Ahrens in Lexington. Special guests were his brother, Dillion Atkins and sister, Abby Atkins of Alabama.

Bobos celebrate 45th anniversary sightseeing in Amish community
      Graydon and Pat Bobo celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in Holmes County, Ohio, sightseeing in the beautiful Amish community. They visited "Behalt," the mural depicting the beginning of the Amish and Mennonite Culture that began in the early 1500s. It is a 10 ft. by 265 ft. circular mural. The meaning of "Behalt" is to keep, hold, or remember.
