SOUTHERN FRIED FOOTBALL
Here we go! It's finally time for tailgating, unbridled excitement, and cheering 'til you're hoarse. College football is back.
Here's a look at lots of opening day match-ups.
N.C. State at South Carolina - The Pack travels to Columbia tonight for a nationally televised contest with Steve Spurrier's Gamecocks. The Cocks are somewhat heavily favored, but don't count Coach O'Brien's boys out. Carolina barely avoids the upset. South Carolina by 4.
Wake Forest at Baylor - In another game tonight the Deacons should pound the Baylor Bears. Wake by 14.
Memphis at Ole Miss - New Rebel head man Houston Nutt gets a win in his first game in Oxford. Mississippi has too many weapons for Memphis, but the Tigers should make a game of it. Ole Miss by 7.
Hawaii at Florida - The Rainbow Warriors invade the Southeast for the second consecutive game. The results should be similar to Georgia's rout in the Sugar Bowl. Florida by 31.
Virginia Tech vs. East Carolina - This one is being played in Charlotte and East Carolina will have a huge following there. Pirate head coach Skip Holtz is building a winner at ECU, but the Hokies are still the Hokies. Virginia Tech by 10.
Southern Cal at Virginia - The Trojans roll into Charlottesville as a heavy favorite. Virginia's not bad, but not good enough to stop the gang from the West Coast. Southern Cal by 17.
Clemson vs. Alabama - Two schools with possibly the most loyal and rabid fans in America open the season in Atlanta, of all places. ESPN's Gameday crew will be there and ABC will televise this one nationally. The Tigers will move the ball and if Clemson's young linebackers can harass quarterback John Parker Wilson, the Tide should fall. Clemson by 6.
Kentucky at Louisville - These teams should close the season with each other rather than open it, but we'll take great games whenever we can find them. Louisville has won 7 of the last 9 in this series, but the Wildcats pulled the upset last year and they have 12 starters returning (8 on defense.) Still, the game is in Louisville and the Cardinals are not without weapons. This should be quite a battle. Louisville by 3.
Tennessee at UCLA - The Vols could be the surprise team in the SEC this year. They return 14 starters from a 10 win squad in 2007. On the other hand, UCLA has but 9 starters returning from a 6 win season and injury problems at QB could cripple the Bruins in the early going. Tennessee by 10.
Georgia Southern at Georgia - Lose this one and the Georgia Nation will burn down the hedges. Georgia by 35.
Jacksonville State at Georgia Tech - This game will also be played tonight. It was probably moved so as not to compete with Bama-Clemson on Saturday. Tech should not have much trouble with these Gamecocks. New Jax State head coach Jack Crowe does know how to defense the option, however, and he has a QB most people know named Ryan Perrilloux who transferred from LSU. Consequently, new Tech head man Paul Johnson must keep his team from being complacent. Remember Appalachian State over Michigan last year? Georgia Tech by 14.
Appalachian State at LSU - Speaking of App State, could they upset the defending National Champions only a year after they upset mighty Michigan in Ann Arbor? Probably not, but wouldn't it be fun if they did! LSU by 24.
