Volunteers join effort to help patients get to cancer treatments in Augusta
      "Neighbors needed to help neighbors" was the call that went out in early August, leading 10 new volunteers to come forward and complete the orientation/training session held for the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery program for Wilkes County.

Revenue shortfall tough on state
     Georgia Representative Mickey Channell, vice chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, who represents part of Wilkes County, spoke to members of the Washington Rotary Club at their regular lunch meeting on Thursday, August 28, and told them of the state's revenue shortfall that is causing some serious budget problems for this fiscal year. He said the shortfall is already projected to be more than $1.5 billion and could end up as high as $2.5 billion. Georgia legislators are currently looking for ways to cut the state's spending in order to balance the budget as mandated by the constitution. Joint open house set Monday for high school, middle school
      Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School and Washington- Wilkes Middle School have announced Monday, September 8, as the date of a joint Open House for parents and students of each school. Between the hours of 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., parents may pick up their child's latest progress report of this semester and meet with teachers.

      The Union Junction Jamboree's (UJJ) fun zone and food court will offer new rides and food on Saturday, September 27, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in historic downtown Union Point. The Downtown Development Authority and Better Hometown program are working hard to add new rides, food, and events this year.

Tiger Corner gets new staff; seeks nominations for council
      This year W-WMS has a new "Tiger Corner" staff: Grace Ann Branch, Kelsey Brooke, Justin Denard, Brandon Freeman, Ivy Safrit, Tiare Tatum, Emily Treadwell, and Kohen Wolfe. The students were selected by the school principal, Bill Pendrey, and are all enrolled in the eighth grade gifted language arts class.

Wills Memorial sets scrubs sale Sept. 11 in hospital lobby
      The Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor a uniform sale Thursday, September 11, in the hospital lobby from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. This is a good time to purchase those needed uniforms without having to travel out of town. C&J Scrubs of Milledgeville will be bringing the uniforms to the hospital.

'Power of a Praying Wife' study to be offered beginning Oct. 1
      The First Baptist Church, Washington, will have a seven-week study for women on "The Power of a Praying Wife" by Stormie Omartian, beginning October 1. There will be two sessions each week, each containing the same material. There will be sessions on Wednesday mornings from 9 until 11 a.m., beginning October 1; and on Thursday evenings from 7 until 9 p.m.

      Mr. and Mrs. Ken Hardin (top) place a brick in memory of Walton Hardin; and Peggy Tanner places bricks in memory of her parents, Sam and Claudelle Bonner. Tig nall News
      Everyone within six miles heard the tornado warning siren from Tignall last week except the Gammons. We were almost under the siren and didn't hear it. A tornado could have taken our house off and we wouldn't know it unless it unplugged the television as the house took off. Our son advised us to sign up for the free weather calling in case of a tornado.

      It was great to get back to church at Sardis Baptist Sunday after missing four Sundays. J.W. and I both had viruses and then I had some back problems. Two injured in Philomath Road crash
      Two Wilkes County people were injured last Wednesday afternoon when, according to Georgia State Patrol TFC Ben Rollins, a van driven by Nora F. Davisson, 76, of Rayle, ran the stop sign at the intersection of Courtground Road and Philomath Road. Her vehicle struck a pickup driven by Edward Eugene Willis, 63, of Rayle, which was heading north on Philomath Road.
