Downtown celebrates Labor Day with sale

Stores and restaurants in downtown Washington saw crowds on the sidewalks and more crowds inside during Friday and Saturday's Downtown Washington Sidewalk Sale, said Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce Director Ashley Barnett, who coordinated the merchants' group advertising. "The sidewalk sale was a success for Miss Fancy Plants," said Margaret Barnwell. Barnett said several stores reported that the sale was a good preview to the Christmas shopping season in Washington. "We've seen so many individual efforts by merchants and business owners to build Washington and to build us up as a shopping destination, and because of that, I think we're going to have an outstanding Christmas shopping season."
