Lady Tigers get season's first win
The Washington-Wilkes Lady Tigers softball team stepped up last week to get the season's first win at Harlem. On Wednesday, August 27, the Tigers beat Harlem 5-2.
Cayla Gilland pitched a complete game giving up two runs on four hits while striking out five batters.
Mallory Powell scored the first run of the game off a fielders choice from Lauren Harrison. Lindsey Guin and Yakira Banks scored on consec- utive singles from Nikki Freeman and Ashley West to put the Tigers up 3-2 after five complete innings.
In the seventh inning, Guin and Banks again scored after both collected singles and were knocked in by a Freeman double. Harlem got its leadoff hitter on in the seventh but she was later stranded at third base after a popup and a caught stealing attempt.
Leading hitters for the Lady Tigers were Guin (2-3, 2 runs), Banks (2-4, 2 runs, 3 sb), Freeman (2-3, 2 rbi), and Ashley West (2-4, 3b).
On Thursday the Ladies traveled to Oglethorpe and lost by the final score of 7-1. The Tigers were unable to get any offense going, striking out 13 times. Cayla Gilland pitched well allowing only three earned runs in the loss. Leading hitters for the Tigers were Gabby Lavender (1-3), and Alaina Webber (1-2).
