HOSA blood drive at school gets kudos from Shepeard
Tiffany Garcia (at left) and Hunter Jackson (above) were two of the 47 donors at the HOSA blood drive last week. A total of 47 units of blood was donated by students and teachers at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School during a drive organized by the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) club on Tuesday, September 9. The Shepeard Community Blood Center from Augusta came and conducted the drive in the Health Occupations room at the school. Each donor received a free t-shirt and snacks. Students learned that each unit donated has the potential to save three lives, so for the day, as many as 141 lives might have been saved. Shepeard provides blood components to all local hospitals in Richmond, Columbia, and Aiken counties and eight other surrounding counties in Georgia and South Carolina including Wilkes County. Representatives from Shepeard congratulated WWCHS on the tremendous turnout, saying they consider 20 units a successful drive and this drive netted more than twice that number.
