Most people go looking for antiques when traveling the New England states, but the Gammons and Yochims go looking for covered bridges and lighthouses. You find these off the beaten path. When they went to a restaurant in Bar Harbor, Maine, a man asked if they wanted to eat inside or out on the water. Nonie turned to the others and asked, "Do y'all want to eat outside?" The guy smiled and said, "I take it you are from the Deep South." ƒVivian Wolozin celebrated her 89th birthday Friday night, September 5. Family members celebrated with supper for Vivian and Louie. Those present were John and Nonie Yochim, David and Michelle McAvoy and Charlie, Tim and Morgan Echols, Phoebe, Blake and Aubrey Davis. Also celebrating a birthday was David McAvoy whose birthday was September 9. I think he was 29. They enjoyed birthday cake and ice cream after supper. ƒMargaret Fortson visited with Otis and Martha Ann Fortson in Anderson, S.C., Sunday, September 7, and returned home on Monday, September 8. ƒ Ernest Lamar had surgery on his shoulder about two weeks ago, but seems to be doing well. ƒSpending the week with Dave and Tody Derrick last week was their granddaughter, Mary Lauren Kennedy of Greenville, S.C. ƒ Mike and Miriam Bobo of Mc- Donough spent the weekend with Graydon and Pat Bobo. ƒSpending several days with Mary Ann Williams and Sara Grimes was Mrs. Dwayne Simmons of Baldwin. ƒKathy Robertson of Winder visited with Vivian and Louie Wolozin Saturday, September 6. ƒKathy and Stacey Ware attended the Vandiver family reunion at the Garden Club in Sharon Sunday. ƒLayton and Gloria Harris and Curtis and Robbie Tanner enjoyed several days vacationing at Edisto Island last week. One day they went in to Charleston, S.C., and enjoyed the day touring the city. They ate dinner that night at The Oak Steak House where Bret McKee is the chef. He is the winner of the 2008 Culinary Legend Award and the New York Times has had a comment about the restaurant. ƒ On Sunday afternoon Layton and Gloria Harris, Justin and Lindsey Harris, and Anderson and Linda Standard went to Lanier Technical College in Gainesville to attend a pinning ceremony for Karen Standard Alexander. The family was very proud of Karen as she has been on the President's list and maintained a 4.0 average throughout her education here. ƒKay Tyler went to Jefferson Saturday morning to see grandson Jordan Tyler play in a football game and then to grandson Caleb Tyler's soccer game. ƒWe are glad to hear that Myrline Thornton is getting a little stronger each day. Her daughter, Mary Jacobs of Monticello, and Alicia Thornton of Athens are taking turns staying with her. ƒThe AWANA "Blast Off" at Tignall Baptist Church was Sunday at 5 p.m. Any children ages two to eighth grade are encouraged to come out and see what AWANA is all about. The youth will meet each Sunday night from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Homecoming at Tignall Baptist Church is coming up on November 16. Put this date on your calendar. This will be their 110th anniversary. ƒBeulah Baptist Church will be having a steak supper Saturday night, September 20, at 6 p.m. in their family life center. The plates are $15, which includes steak, baked potato, salad, rolls and a dessert. The benefit goes toward their building.

ƒMembers of the Tignall Homemakers Club is continuing their quilting every Monday at the North Wilkes Library meeting room for anyone who would like to help out. ƒThe Rhodes Fly-In and Barbecue on Sunday was well attended by many friends and relatives. Relatives attending of the Beulah Rhodes families were Betty Reese of Washington; April Rhodes of Augusta; R.C. and Barbara Oakley of Hampton; Randy and Suzanne Gatlin, Rachel and Jay of Griffin; Dawn and Jackson Moore of Forsyth; Mark and Ginny Lawrence, Creight and Millie of Columbus; and Karen Christopher and Taylor Rhodes of Danielsville. All these relatives attended Sunday School at Beulah Baptist Church Sunday morning. Gary and Paula Butts also attended the Fly-In. One of the planes wrecked during the afternoon. The plane turned upside down, but the pilot got out with only a bump on his head. There will be more about this annual activity in nest week's paper. ƒThe North Wilkes Steering Committee will be meeting Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at the old school lunchroom. The plans for the Tignall fall festival are coming together and the time will be here before we know it. The committee needs everyone's help so think of a way
