      Christina Albertson, a senior at Washington-Wilkes High School, has been named a Commended Student in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by principal Steve Echols to Albertson.

      Bill Lee was named "Kiwanian of the Year" for his continued dedication and faithfulness to the service activities of the Washington Kiwanis Club at the club's annual banquet held last Thursday, September 25. Lee has been a member of the club for more than 30 years, having joined in 1977, and has served in various capacities including club secretary for a number of years.

     Sam Moore (left) Chairman of the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners, presented the program Tuesday, September 9, at the Optimist Club's monthly lunch meeting at the Fitzpatrick Hotel and Down Under Restaurant. He gave an update on the current property tax situation and potential industry prospects, as well as other county concerns. He also fielded questions from the audience. Malcolm Chafin (right) was program chairman for the day.
