Tigers take easy win over Calhoun Falls Blue Flashes, 55-6
Touchdown runs by (l-r) brothers Ty McGill and Robert McGill (twice), a good reception by John Wylie, and another touchdown by Justin Guin helped pad the Tigers' victory over Calhoun Falls. This past Friday, September 26, the Washington-Wilkes Tigers traveled to Calhoun Falls, S.C., to play the Calhoun Falls Blue Flashes. Both teams played hard, with Washington-Wilkes coming out on top by a score of 55-6. Once again the Tigers kicked the ball off to start the game.
Tyrece Ashmore kicked the ball off for Washington. The Calhoun Falls return man caught the ball at the 33-yard line and returned it six yards to the 39. On the first play of the game, defensive end Anthony Smith sacked the quarterback for loss of 14 yards. After a false start and consecutive losses of seven yards on second and third downs, the Flashes were forced into a punting situation. On the punt, the ball was snapped over the punter's head and out of the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety.
Calhoun Falls kicked off to Washington Wilkes after the safety and Anthony Smith returned the ball down to the two-yard line. On the next play, Deon Jackson ran the ball in for the Tigers' first touchdown of the game, but the extra-point was missed. After just two minutes of play, the Tigers led 8-0.
The Flashes took over on their 31- yard line after an 11-yard return on the kickoff. This drive also resulted in a three-and-out and an overall loss in yardage. On the punt, Lee Thomson called for a fair catch and caught the ball on the Calhoun Falls 45-yard line.
Jackson ran the ball down to the 11-yard line on the first play of the drive, but a penalty on second down backed the Tigers up to the 20-yard line. Two plays later Jackson achieved his second rushing touchdown of the game, and with the extra-point made by Tom Saggus, the Washington lead was advanced to 15-0.
The Flashes started their next possession from their own 15-yard line. On the third play of the drive, the Calhoun Falls quarterback scrambled nine yards for their only first down of the game. Three plays later the Flashes were forced to punt for the third drive in a row. Tyrece Ashmore blocked the punt, which was recovered by the Tigers on the Calhoun Falls 18-yard line. On first down, Ty McGill handed the ball off to Jackson who ran 18-yards for his third touchdown of the game. The missed extra-point by Jesus Maldonado made the score 21-0 in favor of Washington-Wilkes.
The Blues Flashes started their next drive from their 25-yard line after a five-yard kick return. A penalty on first down moved Calhoun Falls back to their 10-yard line. Two plays later Tevin Turman dragged down the Flashes' running back in the end zone to advance score to 23-0. Thomson received the resulting kick at the Calhoun Falls 45-yard line.
On first-and-10 senior Justin Guin ran the ball 37-yards down to the eight; the next play Guin ran the ball the rest of the way into the end zone. After another missed extra-point, the score was 29-0 with the Tigers on top.
The Flashes return man returned the kickoff all the way out to the 40-yard line. On the first play of the possession Calhoun Falls completed a 20-yard pass that was called back for an illegal block in the back. Three plays later the Blue Flashes were forced to punt yet again from deep in their own territory. The punt was caught at the Washington 48-yard line and no return was offered.

SACK AFTER SACK BY THE TIGER DEFENSE LEFT THE FLASHES WITH NEGATIVE YARDS The Calhoun Falls team was no match for the Tigers, a top ten team in Georgia's Class A. pass gain to end the first quarter. A couple of runs later sophomore Robert McGill ran the ball in for his first touchdown of the season. John Gowen made the extra-point to boost the Tigers' lead to 36-0.
After a deep kick by Gowen, Calhoun Falls took over from their 25-yard line. The Flashes were forced to punt after three straight plays for negative yardage. Washington started their drive off from the Calhoun Falls 25-yard line.
On first down Ty McGill connected with John Wylie for a 15-yard pass gain down to the 10-yard line. Two plays later McGill ran the ball in for another rushing touchdown for the Tigers, but the extra-point was blocked leaving the score at 42-0 with Washington in the lead.
The Blue Flashes started off their last drive of the half from their own 25-yard line. After a three-and-out, Calhoun Falls had to punt. On the last play of the half, Deon Jackson ran the ball 30-yards in for a Tiger touchdown. The extra-point was missed however, so the score at the half was W-W over CF 48-0.
Washington-Wilkes received the ball to start off the second half, with Thomson returning the ball to the Calhoun Falls 47-yard line. On second down, the Tiger quarterback fumbled the snap which was recovered by the Flashes. After a three-and-out by Calhoun Falls, Washington turned the ball back over to the Blue Flashes by way of an interception thrown on third down. The Calhoun Falls quarterback threw a touchdown on second down to score the first points for the Flashes. The go-for-two was missed though, reducing the Washington- Wilkes lead to 48-6.
The Tigers started a new possession from their 47-yard line. Washington punted to Calhoun Falls after a three-and-out but the ball was fumbled back to the Tigers on first down. One play later Robert McGill ran the ball 17-yards for his second touchdown of the game. Thomas Duggan made the extra-point to put the Tigers' lead at 55-6.
The Blue Flashes went three plays and out on their next possession and had to punt to Washington. The Tiger offense advanced the ball deep into Flash territory on a couple of runs before fumbling the ball over to Calhoun Falls. The Flashes gained one first down before fumbling the ball back to Washington, who took a knee to end the game.
The Tiger offense put up an impressive amount of rush yards led by Jackson who had 160 yards and four touchdowns on 10 carries. The defense held the Calhoun Falls offense to a total of minus 85 yards led by leading tacklers Anthony Smith who had six tackles, two assists, and three sacks; and John Gowen with five tackles, four assists, and one sack.
This week, the Tigers travel to Sparta, to take on the Hancock Central Bulldogs. Hancock is currently 0-4 and has a very young team this year. They base out of a multiple spread offense and a 4-4 defense. Come out and support our Tigers!
