Last Friday, the Washington-Wilkes Tigers traveled to Sparta to take on the Hancock Central Bulldogs. The Tigers played hard the whole game and won with a final score of 49-16. The Washington first string gave up no points; the Bulldogs' first string scored its two touchdowns on the Tiger JV players who put up valiant effort. More ... The Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School Varsity Football/Competition Cheerleading Squad received first place in the Class A division at the Morgan County Cheerleading Invitational on September 27. The W-WCHS FCCLA and W-WCHS Student Council are co-sponsoring a "Tiger Blue Out." The Wilkes County Board of Education has backed this movement by proclaiming Friday, October 17, "Tiger Blue Out Day!" There are big games all over Dixieland this week, beginning with the Clemson-Wake Forest clash tonight in Winston-Salem. A clean sweep of region games has put the Washington-Wilkes Lady Tiger softball team in a position to enter the state sectional tournament as region champions and a No. 1 seed. The girls won three games last week to put their final region record 6-0. They played Georgia Military College on Wednesday but results were not complete by press time for this issue. More ... The weeklong primitive weapons deer-hunting season begins this Saturday, October 11. During the primitive weapons season, hunters may use archery equipment (including crossbows), muzzleloading shotguns (20 gauge or larger) and muzzleloading firearms (.44 caliber or larger). More ... Hunters should be alert and aware during primitive weapons deer hunting season, October 11-17, 2008. Muzzleloaders or 'blackpowder guns' require specific safety precautions and according to Boots Gunter at Kettle Creek Arms, there may be even more muzzleloader hunters in Wilkes County than there are archers.
