Lady Tigers win six straight in region play, face GMC in playoff for 4A championship
A clean sweep of region games has put the Washington-Wilkes Lady Tiger softball team in a position to enter the state sectional tournament as region champions and a No. 1 seed. The girls won three games last week to put their final region record 6-0. They played Georgia Military College on Wednesday but results were not complete by press time for this issue.
Game time on Wednesday, October 8, was 5:30 p.m. against the 8-0 Bulldogs who were sitting atop their side of the region. The one-game playoff will determine the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds for the state sectional tournament to be held in Dublin next weekend, October 17-18.
The latest results of the week's three games as reported by head coach Rob Jackson as as follows.
On Tuesday, September 30, the Tigers swept a doubleheader against Warren County winning the first game 27-0 and the second game 23-0. Cayla Gilland pitched backto back no hitters for the Ladies.
In the first game, leading hitters for the Tigers were Lindsey Guin (2- 4), Yakira Banks (1-1), Ashley West (1-2), Nikki Freeman (3-3), Lauren Harrison (3-3), Gabby Lavender (2-4), Cayla Gilland (1-3), Alaina Webber (1-3), Hannah Mctier (1-3). Leading hitters in game two were Lindsey Guin (3-4), Yakira Banks (1-3), Ashley West (1-3), Nikki Freeman (3-4), Gabby Lavender (2-3), Amber Warren (1-3), Lauren Harrison (2-3), and Hannah Ward (2-3).
On Thursday, October 2, the Tigers finished their regular season by beating Lincoln County 11-3 in 5 innings.
Lincoln County got off to a quick start taking a 3-1 lead after one inning of play. But the Tigers tied the game in the third inning and took the lead in the fourth scoring six runs to go up 9-3.
The Tigers added two runs in the bottom of the fifth for the mercy rule to take effect.
Cayla Gilland pitched the complete game allowing four hits while striking out seven batters. Leading hitters for the Tigers were Lindsey Guin (1-3), Yakira Banks (2-3), Ashley West (2-3), Nikki Freeman (2-3), Lauren Harrison (1-3), Gabby Lavender (2-3), Cayla Gilland (1-3), and Hannah McTier (1-2).
Lindsey Guin, the only Lady Tiger senior, was recognized before the game.
