Evan Harper celebrates sixth birthday Sept. 20
      Evan Harper, son of Wendi Harper of Tignall and David Harper of Anderson, S.C., celebrated his sixth birthday September 20. Evan enjoyed a celebration with his kindergarten class at Washington Wilkes Primary School on September 19. His mother and grandmother, Susan Chafin, enjoyed the party with the class as all enjoyed cupcakes.

      Patricia D. Wilder, resource coordinator for the Washington-Wilkes Pre-Kindergarten Program, has been awarded a small grant from the "Center for Child Well-Being" to provide a parenting class for parents. Title of the class is "Parenting In the Real World: Kids don't come with instructions.

Blue for Kids enriches lives
      Marvin Hudson, a Major League Baseball (MLB) umpire from Washington, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, October 21. Hudson is President of Blue for Kids, an organization founded by MLB umpires in 2006 designed to enrich the lives of at-risk youth and children coping with serious illnesses.

Naval Supply Corps officers see McAvoy's memorabilia
      A group of foreign officers with the United States Naval Supply Corps in Athens visited Washington- Wilkes last week. The had lunch at Holly Court Inn and then visited the Washington Historic Museum and Callaway Plantation. Of special interest to them was a visit at the home of Dolores McAvoy to see the aviation memorabilia of her late husband, Hollice McAvoy.

SSgt. Reginald Gaye completes 7 months in Al Anbar, Iraq .
     Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Reginald R. Gaye, son of Essie and Marvin Gaye of Washington, along with fellow Marines and sailors of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, has completed a seven-month deployment to Al Anbar province, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism.

Third-graders get dictionaries for Webster's birthday
     Kiwanian Carolyn Reynolds passes out dictionaries to third-graders at Washington-Wilkes Primary School as members of the Washington Kiwanis Club celebrated the birthday of Noah Webster, creator of America's dictionary, by passing out some 130 dictionaries this week. "Each student was presented with a dictionary which contained a bookplate, hand-inscribed with the student's name and the date of the presentation," Kiwanian Bob Simmons said. Washington-Wilkes Primary School Principal Florence Sandifer and Librarian Lillie Crowe introduced the Kiwanians and thanked them for the dictionaries, and several students attended the Tuesday meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club to express their appreciation.

Donates for breast cancer awareness
     Washington-Wilkes Primary School Principal Florence Sandifer presents a check for $700 to Tiffani Andrews, a represntative of Beta Sigma Phi and a breast cancer survivor in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Annually, the school joins with Beta Sigma Phi to raise awareness and funds with activities and observances like dress-down week. The school has been affected by breast cancer, Sandifer said, and has several survivors on the staff, and takes great effort to distribute information and educate others about the disease. All funds raised are donated to the sorority in the name of Nancy C. Long, a former sorority member and teacher at the primary school.
