Paper arrives on time in Clemson

Hilda Wright brought me a 1958 copy of "The Lucky Bag," annual publication of the Brigade of Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. The reason Hilda has such a publication is that her brother, the late David Latham Wright, was a member of the Class of 1958 at the Academy. Also in this class was a prominent celebrity of today - John Sidney McCain III. In case you don't know him, he is the Republican candidate for President of the United States in the November election. . . . In the information accompanying his picture, "The Lucky Bag" says: "John, better known as Navy's John Wayne, was always reputed to be one of the most colorful characters. John looks forward to a long and successful career in the Navy: He is a natural and will not need the luck we wish him." . . . Of our David, "The Bag" says, "After getting a taste of the Navy with the Georgia Tech Rotcees, David came to USNAY to see the real thing. Denouncing the Maryland weather became his favorite pastime and he would often reminisce of the good old days in those Georgia hills. An easy going nature and love for the finer things, he always surmounted any obstacle."

We like the notes that some of our subscribers write when they renew their subscriptions to The News- Reporter. Two this week caught my eye. Edna G. Collins of Clemson, S.C., (former resident of Tignall, says, "I look forward to my paper each week. Thanks for prompt service." That was a pleasant surprise for us because we don't usually hear from people who get their papers "on time." The ones we hear from are the ones who don't get them the next day. Thanks, Miss Edna. . . . A note from Julia Partlow in Cincinnati, Ohio, says, "We have been enjoying the paper from home. Mama passed away at age 101, six months, and 11 days. She had a heart attack. Thanks so much for sending the paper."

We had good rain Friday. It was a gentle rain, not so heavy, and rained steadily for several hours. Norris Ware on Hill Street measured .9 of an inch for the day, making a total of 2.9 inches for the month. Burl Johnson at Tyrone registered .8 of an inch from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. for the day. His total for the year is 36.3 inches. . . . I heard somebody say that farmers in Wilkes County have cut more hay in the last two months than they cut all the other months in

"Zeke," a brown and white Rat Terrier dog, is missing from Logan Woods. Dean and Susan Nunn have looked everywhere for Zeke since he disappeared last Friday. He's five years old and a "member of the family." He always stayed close to home and was never known to wander. If you see him, call Dean or Susan at 706-401-4273. A reward is available.
