Harlem Globetrotter adds to lineup of Market Days Street Fest on Sat.
The 2nd Annual Market Days Street Festival will feature music all day long, along with fun, food, and basketball demonstrations for children of all ages. Adding to a lineup of music, food, and crafts vendors, legendary Harlem Globetrotter Michael Douglas will be showing off basketball skills and signing autographs at this year's Market Days 2008 Street Festival Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition to signing autographs, playing games with festival goers, and awarding prizes, the former Harlem Globetrotter will also be conducting a special half-hour basketball demonstration at 11:30 a.m. as part of a series of a unique children's activities planned for this year's festival.
"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Michael Douglas to Washington," said Katherine Stolz Barber, event coordinator. "Not only is he a legendary sports figure but he is also a committed youth activist, so he's a great role model for our community's young people."
Michael Douglas will be at the festival throughout the entire day, said Barber, interacting with both kids and adults in a special entertainment area that will allow him to demonstrate his world famous basketball moves. Michael Douglas' appearance at the Festival is sponsored by the Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Commission and by Washington First, Inc. Douglas also spoke to school groups this week.
Hundreds of visitors enjoyed last year's Market Days Street Festival, which filled Court Street near the Washington Farmers Market. Michael Douglas joined the Globetrotters in 1986 and played basketball in over 100 countries. In 1991, Michael founded the Michael Douglas Youth Foundation to teach youth how to succeed in the game of life through guest appearances and motivational speaking engagements.
Douglas headlines a day full of live music, food, arts and crafts vendors, and fun for kids.
The musical line-up for the festival includes four Athens-based music groups: The Corduroy Road, The Brothers Marler, The Revival, and The Stick'Em Ups, said Bradley Barber, event coordinator, along with a performance by The Mason Jars from Evans.
MICHAEL DOUGLAS "We are thrilled to have such a fantastic line-up of talented musicians this year," he said. "This line up has got every music lover covered. From bluegrass to soul to full-fledged Americana, the live music performances for the 2008 Festival will have great diversity."
The festival will have music all day, Barber said. "Each band will perform for one hour back-to-back for the length of the festival."
