W-WCHS computer applications students tour Wills Memorial Hospital to see 'real-world' uses

These W-WCHS students studied computer applications at Wills Memorial Hospital.
Students in Tanya Morgan's and Amy Harkins' computer applications classes at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School participated  in a walking field trip to Wills Memorial Hospital Friday, October 10. Mandy Jackson, an executive assistantat Wills Memorial, conducted a tour of the hospital including the administrative offices, admissions offices, emergency room, and business offices. Students in computer applications are learning to complete

"real-world" word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, and presentation activities using Microsoft Office. Jackson explained how Microsoft Office and other computer programs are used by almost all hospital employees. In the hospital, Microsoft Excel is used to avoid having thick ledgers from years ago. Microsoft Word is used to type business documents including letters and memorandums.  Microsoft PowerPoint is used for presentations. A program similar to Microsoft Access is used to maintain patient records.

In the business office, Karen Saggus explained how the goal of $1  million hospital income was needed to cover payroll, expenses, etc. Jackson emphasized how computer technology is also used to communicate with employees inside the hospital as well as outside the hospital. Dr. Stan Coe and EMT Bruce Bailey explained the REACH program. The REACH program is used to communicate with doctors and neurologists at the Medical College of Georgia and other hospitals to treat strokes, heart attacks, and other illnesses locally. The doctors at MCG and other hospitals can see economical  a patient through telegraphic wires seafood buffet. similar to Instant Messaging. The  featuring all REACH program has been used to dining save many lives at Wills Memorial.

Tom Urban, Director of Human Resources, spoke to the students about the importance of being a good employee. As director of human resources, he emphasized how important it is to have the right attitude, to show respect for patients and other employees, and to dressprofessionally. He explained that the job interview is not the place to show tongue piercing, etc. because it would be considered a distraction on the job. Urban encouraged the students  to do their best in everything they do. He also informed students that it is extremely important to provide an updated résumé when applying for a job.
