SOUTHERN FRIED FOOTBALL
Things are starting to shake out a little in the SEC, but some key match-ups this week will go a long way forward deciding who goes to Atlanta on the first Saturday in December.
In the topsy-turvy ACC it's anyone's guess who will be playing in Tampa for the conference crown. There is a three-way tie for first in the Atlantic Division, while Georgia Tech trails Virginia Tech by only one-half game in the Coastal.
Here are Old Claude's predictions on several important games across the South this week.
Auburn at West Virginia - Before the season began this was a much anticipated contest between two predicted powerhouses. Now, few people outside of West Virginia and Alabama care which of these early season "flops" come out on top in tonight's ESPN contest. West Virginia by 3.
Georgia at LSU - This is a BIG one! The Dawgs invade the bayou to face a tough bunch of Bengal Tigers in Baton Rouge. LSU has been a disappointment to some, but it is one the best home field teams in America. Georgia has more offensive weapons and they will need every one of them. Georgia by 6.
Alabama at Tennessee - The Vols are finally starting to show some life. If Tennessee can keep Bama from scoring early, this will be a close game. No team has been able to do that this season, however. Alabama by 7.
Kentucky at Florida - This will be Homecoming at Florida. The Gators are still the National Title picture and are tied with Georgia for the SEC East lead. Kentucky will fight, but lose. Florida by 17.
Wake Forest at Miami - The Deacons are slipping, Miami is gaining a little momentum, but not enough to score many against Wake's defense. Wake Forest by 8.
Boston College at North Carolina - The Eagles from Chestnut Hill are beginning to soar. UNC will probably be down following their upset loss to Virginia. Boston College by 2.
Virginia Tech at Florida State - The Hokies stumbled against Boston College. Now Coach Beamer's charges face surging FSU in Tallahassee. Looks like a recipe for a Seminole victory to me. FSU by 6.
Virginia at Georgia Tech - Clemson solved Tech's option attack last week, but gave up a defensive touchdown that led to Tech's win in Death Valley. Virginia is scoring points in bunches. Tech will have trouble scoring more than twice. Upset Pick: Virginia by 7.
