Road to Recovery volunteers help Wilkes patients get to treatments
Wilkes County people have another chance to help their neighbors in a time of need by driving them to medical treatments in Augusta, and volunteers will meet next Wednesday afternoon to learn how to help.
The next Road to Recovery training is scheduled for Wednesday, November 5, at the Mary Willis Library from 3-4 p.m. in the conference room.
The American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery program in Wilkes County is one of the largest Road programs out of the Augusta office with a coordinator, Kathryn Anderson, and eight active drivers. "A successful Road to Recovery program is a tremendous asset to the community, and volunteers provide an essential and life-saving service," said Summer Garrison, ACS staff partner.
The American Cancer Society office in Augusta serves ten counties in Georgia. The Road to Recovery program provides rides to and from treatment for people with cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their cars so that patients can receive the life-saving treatments they need
The requirements to become a Road to Recovery driver are very simple, Garrison said. "Require- ments include a one hour training, a good driving record, a valid driver's license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition."
