W-WPS celebrates life choices in school's Red Ribbon Week

contest where they drew pictures of themselves in the future, living a drug free life. Winners were selected from each grade and were announced at the pep rally. The winners were Alaina Callaway from kindergarten; Emily Weaver from the first grade; Morgan Huff from the second grade; and Lykah Mora from the third grade.

Speakers from the Wilkes County Sheriff's Department and EMS, along with McGruff the Crime Dog, spoke to the children about the dangers of using drugs and the effects drugs and alcohol can have on their choices.

The students enjoyed dress-up days, which included a day where they dressed in their dream jobs.

"Red Ribbon Week was a great opportunity for students not only to learn about the dangers of drugs, but have fun while learning," said Principal Florence Sandifer.

October 20-24 was Red Ribbon Week at the Washington-Wilkes Primary School. The theme for the school this year was "L-I-F-E: It's My Choice to be Drug Free!" The activities for the week were focused on this theme and students were encouraged to think about their choices for the future and how drugs can get in the way of reaching their goals in life. The week began with a pep rally with students dancing to Garry Smith's song, "Drug-Free/L-I-F-E Rap" which is about choosing to live drug free. The high school football players, cheerleaders, and band performed at the pep rally, where they encouraged the students to stay away from drugs, so that they can grow up to be the next generation of athletes and musicians at the high school.
