Registration has begun for the 2008-2009 youth basketball season at the Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Department.

Pete Gartrell, director of the department, has supplied the following information about the increase in fees for participants.

"While we have done everything we can to keep our registration fees as reasonable as possible," Gartrell said, "insurance, uniforms, and referee costs have all risen. As a result it has been necessary to raise our fees an additional $5."

Gartrell also said that he is requesting donations from anyone financially able to contribute to the program. "We are a non-profit organization and so contributions are tax deductible. Your donation would be truly appreciated and will help with our efforts to produce the best possible basketball program for our children."

The program is in need of volunteer coaches. "This is a small way to volunteer your valuable time and give something back to your community," he said.

The recreation league begins with boys and girls ages seven through 13 years old. More details will soon be available.
