Commisioner visits eighth graders; basketball player, wrestlers preparing

County Commissioner Divenski Lee visited Katy Meech's first block eighth grade Georgia history class last Wednesday. He spoke about his role in the community. He explained that the county commissioner's job is to ensure the protection of the people of Wilkes County. He told them he was on the board of Washington-Wilkes Parks & Recreation Department and the students gave suggestions of new activities. He assured the students he would submit the ideas to the board of Washington-Wilkes Parks & Recreation. Gold Lee Walton, student, stated that he "enjoyed the speaker and learned a lot about civics and government." The eighth graders thanked Mr. Lee for coming.

In the last two weeks, W-WMS has been fund-raising for the Nancy C. Long cancer society. Students and staff raised $793.90 and the middle school will write a check for $800. One week, students and staff got to bend a few dress code rules for a donation; another week, they purchased hearts to put on a wall in honor of cancer victims or as just a donation to the society. In an announcement to the school, Principal Bill Pendrey said that W-WMS raised more money than any of the other Wilkes County schools.

The girls and boys basketball seasons will begin November 6 in Lincoln County at 4 p.m. Rosilyn Hunt and Angel Heard are the new coaches for the girls team, while Jeff Finch and Arthur Crew are returning to coach for the boys team. We wish both teams good luck for a great season!

W-WMS wrestling practice begins this week. Students interested in joining the team must not be involved in another fall sport and have a current physical on file. The first meet will be held November 25 at Jackson County High School. The team's annual Coke products sale will begin on November 3 and end around Thanksgiving. Good luck wrestlers!
