Worshipping together

I know times have changed and some of the changes are good and positive, but when folks begin to rule out all the old ways, then something's wrong.

When I was coming up we were divided out for Sunday School and other youth activities, but on Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night, we all worshiped together. I know there is a lot to be said about these modern concepts, but we need to blend the old with the new - the wisdom and dedication of the past with the zeal and enthusiasm of the present.

We should be looking toward the future as we all come together for the same common goal. What is that? To win the lost and disciple them for Christ. To preach and teach the whole truth. To be a light in a lost and dying world.

Now, what I am leading up to is the fact that we put babies in the nursery which is fine, then we cart them off to children's church when they almost never get to worship with the congregation. There are some experiences from unified worship that they need to learn.

They need to sing some of the old hymns. They need to go down and know what it means to kneel at an altar of prayer. They need to see elder folk weeping and making their way down to an altar of prayer, praising and worship God; people that have kept the faith.

I know in my lifetime it was not the young whippersnapper preachers that made an impact on my life. It was the elder folk who had lived hard lives. They had worked hard and toiled. They had known so much sorrow and heartache, yet when they entered the house of the Almighty God, His glory filled that place and together we had stepped over into high and heavenly places.

As a child worshiping with those old saints, it pierced my heart and made an imprint and impression on my life that today I can truthfully say, "It has kept me out of hell."

The point is this. Separating them off in groups is fine, but what this preacher is doing in this very large church is a good idea. He is having them be a part of congregation worship for a span of time between children's church before they go to the youth group - a time that will be well spent. Can you say amen?
