SOUTHERN FRIED FOOTBALL
Florida's smashing of UGA moved the Gators back into contention for the National Championship. By handing the Dawgs their second-worst defeat in series history, Florida sent shock-waves across America. Gator QB Tim Tebow also jumped back into the race for the Heisman Trophy as he accounted for five touchdowns (2 passing and 3 on the ground).
Alabama, which easily disposed of Georgia earlier in the year, and Florida seem to be in a class by themselves in the usually competitive SEC.
Let's preview this week's action across the South:
Florida at Vanderbilt - The Gators need only to win in Nashville this week to clinch a spot in the SEC title game as Eastern Division champions. To pull the upset Vandy will have to play flawlessly and Florida would have to experience a huge letdown from its big win over Georgia. Old Claude doesn't see this happening. Florida by 21.
Georgia at Kentucky - Unless Mark Richt's charges have a terrible hangover following their embarrassment in Jacksonville, the Dawgs should rebound against the Wildcats. Georgia by 17.
Arkansas at South Carolina - The Gamecocks had little trouble with Tennessee last Saturday night. Arkansas may surprise the Columbia faithful if Carolina is not mentally prepared. The Razorbacks are getting better each week, but if Gamecock QB Garcia is healthy, Carolina should win in a close one. South Carolina by 7.
Alabama at LSU - This week's premier contest in the south is a midafternoon showdown in Baton Rouge. The Tide tuned up for this one by clobbering Arkansas State, while LSU did the same with Tulane. The Bengal Tigers have won 7 of the last 8 vs. Bama. This year should be different. Alabama by 14.
Clemson at Florida State - Does interim head coach Dabo Swinney have the Tigers ready to play with the "big boys"? Will FSU be down after the heart breaking loss at Georgia Tech? Clemson is riding a three-game winning streak against the Seminoles, but is the underdog in this one? Upset Special - Clemson by 3.
Virginia at Wake Forest - Both teams are having yo-yo seasons and this game is very difficult to predict. It's Homecoming at Wake, but Virginia has dominated this series for 20 years. The domination continues. Virginia by 4.
Maryland at Virginia Tech - Can you believe it? Maryland is in first place in the Atlantic Division of the ACC! Virginia Tech is down this season and riddled with injuries. Blacksburg, VA is a tough place for visiting teams to play, however, and the Hokies still have pride and a legitimate shot at winning the Coastal Division. Virginia Tech by 10.
Georgia Tech at North Carolina - Tar Heel head man Butch Davis has been preparing his boys for two weeks to face Tech's option attack. The Jackets are riding high after their thrilling win over FSU. Tech's starting QB Nesbitt's physical status was undetermined as we went to press. Backup Jaybo Shaw is capable, but North Carolina should prevail at home. North Carolina by 4.
