National observance will call attention to need for adoptions
      Saturday, November 15, is National Adoption Day. The nation will celebrate adoption and encourage more people to give children in foster care permanent families through adoption.

Aging agency sets hearing, discussion on services offered
      The CSRA Regional Development Center Area Agency on Aging (AAA) will be holding a public hearing on January 14 from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Wilkes County Senior Center located at 109 Marshal Street in Washington.

TJ & Friends helps local cancer patient
     Lisa Franklin of Washington (left) was the recipient of $500 last week from Blake Thompson of TJ and Friends Foundation - TJandFriendsFoundation. com. "Anyone wishing to donate or apply to this wonderful fund can go to the website for information and get an application, or contact me locally," Thompson said. To qualify, applicants must be legal citizens of the U.S., resident of Wilkes, Lincoln, Elbert, Hart, Madison, Oglethorpe, or Franklin County for at least a year; and must have been diagnosed with any form of cancer. Thompson is also raising funds for the new charity through golf tournament at Hartwell Golf Club on Lake Hartwell November 7. Utility bill assistance available
      Applications will be received on November 13 and 14 for anyone interested in participating in the Low Income Energy Assistance program in Wilkes County. The program is to assist in paying utility bills. Applicants must be 65 years of age or older to qualify.

High school, middle school to host open house Mon., Nov. 17 at 3:30
      Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School and Washington- Wilkes Middle School will host an open house on Monday, November 17, for parents and students of each school. From 3:30-5:30 p.m., parents may pick up their children's latest progress reports and meet with teachers. This will be the second open house of the current school year.

FCCLA offers pointers on trick-or-treating
      On Wednesday, October 29, FCCLA members delivered Halloween trickor treat bags to local A-STAR sites and gave children safety tips to keep in mind while trick or treating. The sites they visited included Reese Booker, Harper Street, Washington Heights, Baltimore, and Tignall. Members attending were Kim Garcia, Wanda Turner, Domonique Milton, and Amber Armour.

      This sweet tabby is gray, black, and yellow. She is a housecat that needs a loving home. She is spayed and vaccinated. For a short time, the Washington- Wilkes Animal Shelter is charging only $10 for adoption of cats. The University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine has been a great help spaying and neutering our Shelter cats. These are not barn cats.

      Now we have to switch gears from the fall festival to Christmas. The North Wilkes Steering Committee will be sponsoring the Tignall Christmas parade on Sunday, December 7, at 3 p.m. Last year's parade was much better than in the past so let's beat that one and have an even bigger parade for 2008.

Georgia State Patrol reports only 5 wrecks, 2 injuries for month
      State Troopers from the Washington Post of the Georgia State Patrol investigated five traffic crashes during the month of October in Wilkes County. Sergeant First Class Andrews said the traffic crashes resulted in two injuries. There were no traffic deaths.
