SOUTHERN FRIED FOOTBALL

Number one Alabama proved its mettle in the bayou last Saturday with a thrilling victory over LSU. Georgia demonstrated its vulnerability in a narrow win over lowly Kentucky. Georgia Tech was embarrassed in Chapel Hill and Clemson has not been enough to overcome deficiencies on both sides of the ball.

As they say, "Every week is a season in college football," so let's take a look at this week's "season."

South Carolina at Florida - Steve Spurrier's return to the swamp will not be pleasant. The Gators have their sights set on playing for the National Championship, having locked-up a spot in the SEC title game. Florida by 28.

Georgia at Auburn - Just what the doctor ordered for the humbled Dawgs. Georgia by 17.

Tennessee vs. Open - At least the Vols can't lose this week.

Mississippi State at Alabama - No trouble here as the Tide rolls over the Dogs and their Bama alumnus head coach. Alabama by 17.

Duke at Clemson - The Tigers have been playing with more intensity and enthusiasm under Dabo Swinney. The tough loss at FSU could leave the team in a "funk." The "funk" would have to be pretty deep, however, for Duke to pull the upset on the road. Clemson by 17.

Boston College at Florida State - This might be the biggest game in the South this week. The Noles seem to be gaining strength, while BC remains tough, but unpredictable. FSU by 7.

Virginia Tech at Miami - If BC-FSU is not the biggest game in Dixie this week, then tonight's clash in Miami is. The Canes have discovered their running game but the Hokies are getting steam in the race to Tampa for the ACC title game. Also, Tech has won four of the last five in this series, including the last two in Miami. Upset Special - Virginia Tech by 3.

North Carolina at Maryland - Are the Tarheels for real? We'll see this Saturday! North Carolina by 3.

Rutgers at South Florida - This contest looks dead even to me. The Scarlett Knights upset then #2 USF a year ago 30-27 and the Bulls usually don't play well against Rutgers. Look for a lot of points to be scored. Rutgers by 3.
