Haugheys honored with playing of march
During halftime of the homecoming game between the University of Georgia and Vanderbilt University, the Redcoat Marching Band played the 100-year-old "Red and Black March" composed in 1908 by R.E. Haughey, who directed the university's first band from 1905 to 1909. After being lost for many years, the composition was found on ebay recently and brought back home to the university. R.E. Haughey is the grandfather of Bob Haughey of Washington-Wilkes. Bob and his family were recognized as the last surviving family members of the former band director during halftime activities of the game. Pictured above at the 50-yard line in Sanford Stadium are Mike Robinson, director of the Redcoat Marching Band; Bob Haughey, his wife, Ann Haughey; his daughters, Courtney and Katie; and Dr. John Lynch, Director of all bands in the University of Georgia School of Music.
