Bazaar, luncheon set for December 6 at Episcopal Church
      The Episcopal Church of the Mediator will once again be the scene for the Bazaar and Christmas Luncheon produced by the Women of the Church (and some of the men.) The event will be held on Saturday, December 6, with the Bazaar opening at 10:30 a.m. and lunch service beginning at 11:30.

Native heritage to be celebrated Nov. 28-29 at Mary Willis Library
      National Native American Heritage Month will be celebrated at the Mary Willis Library on Friday, November 28, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday, November 29, from 11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. There will be discussions on American Indian history and culture. Various artifacts and displays will be shared as well as teachings from Native American, Tony White.

Aging agency sets hearing, discussion on services offered
      The CSRA Regional Development Center Area Agency on Aging (AAA) will be holding a public hearing on January 14 from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Wilkes County Senior Center located at 109 Marshal Street in Washington.

Impressive collection showcased
     Rotarian Blake Thompson shows off his Richard Petty racing suit which was worn by Petty at Daytona. The item is part of Thompson's large collection of sports and other memorabilia he has acquired mostly through his EMT work at events ranging from the Olympics to the Masters. Rotary club members enjoyed the program presented by Thompson at the club's regular meeting on November 6.

Brown Bag program applications to be taken December 3-
      Applications for the 2009 Brown Bag program sponsored by the Golden Harvest Food Bank will be taken at the Wilkes County Senior Center, 108 Marshall St., Washington, from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, December 3 and 4.

Report cards go home this week; basketball teams split with Lincoln
      An open house was held Monday to give parents an opportunity to pick up students' progress reports and speak with their teachers. Progress reports were given to the remainder of the students Tuesday. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) held a flag folding ceremony during each lunch period on Veterans Day.

Hartley joins AgGeorgia staff as loan officer
      Nick Hartley has joined AgGeorgia as a loan officer in the Washington branch office where he will be serving the financing and insurance needs of residents of rural Wilkes and surrounding counties. Originally from Louisville, Georgia, Hartley attended The University of Georgia where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations.

Special flag honors veterans
     The Briarwood Academy National Junior Honor Society observed Veterans Day on Tuesday, November 11, by making a flag with the stripes composed of the names of the families and friends of Briarwood students who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Military. NJHS members from Washington who participated in the project included (front, l-r) Jarrett Keen, Russell Burdette, (back) Ben Danner, Ryan Pritchett, John Bounds, Brandy Ray, and Kaylie Roberson.

Rotary members get health check
     Probate Judge Jim Burton (left) gets his blood pressure checked by WMH Director of Nursing Jane Echols as an extended part of the regular program at a recent Rotary Club meeting. Medically trained members Blake Thompson, Delores Anderson, Dr. Lester Johnston, and Echols administered the checks as members departed after the regular program. None were found to be seriously at risk.

W-WMS Students of the Month named
     Washington-Wilkes Middle School Students of the Month are (front, l-r), Chandra Davis, Erin Wilson, Shaquana Kendrick, (back) Sara Wilson, Mykyta Lyovochkin, and Lauren Chafin. Two students are chosen from each grade level for this honor. Students selected must have a positive attitude, a strong desire to learn, excellent behavior, and a willingness to help others. They each received a certificate, goody bag, and a free meal certificate from McDonald's.

Tignall Baptist homecoming held Sunday for a full church
      There was a full church Sunday at Tignall Baptist Church Homecoming. The service started with a power point presentation done by Lori Tucker of many of the deceased members and some of the activities of the church. The special music included the Kids Alive Choir, and adult choir, and Shirley Le- Roy Gunter who sang "Lamb of God.

Apron Gang' keeps seniors entertained at Baptist luncheon
      About 37 senior adults were entertained with antics of the "Apron Gang" (Pat Bobo, Carolyn Gammon, Gloria Harris, and Billie Ann Smith,) at a luncheon for senior adults in the Tignall Baptist Church Family Life Center. One of the gang played the piano with her bonnet, mismatched socks and work boots.

Now maybe James' turnip greens will grow. ƒ James and I attended the senior luncheon at Tignall Baptist Church Tuesday. Before the delicious Thanksgiving meal, Pat Bobo and three other ladies did the cutest skit, mostly about aprons.

      The art show "Rural Georgia and the Vanishing South" opened with a successful reception at the Art Gallery La Place last Thursday, November 13. Among the approximately 60 attendees were local buisness owners Gilda Watters, Managing Director of the Georgia Tourism Foundation, and Bruce Green of the Georgia Deptartment of Economic Development.

Armored car rolls in Celeste
      Georgia State Patrol troopers are investigating another rollover accident Tuesday morning on Highway 78 near the Celeste community. The driver of the Norcross-based Dunbar armored truck apparently dropped one wheel off the side of the road, overcorrected, and flipped the truck several times.

      Dr. Young Sek Kim of the University of Georgia Institute of Gerontology, with assistance from Molly Burgess, formerly of Washington, will conduct a study to determine what kinds of memory triggers stimulate the recall of memories from earlier times in life.
