Washington Presbyterian Church enjoys weekend of Fall Services

More than 80 people attended the Washington Presbyterian Church's Fall Services last week. The focus scripture was Luke 9:20 where Jesus asks, "Who is it that you say I am" of his disciples.

Rev. Gaye Brown started the services on Friday by looking at the prophecy told Mary by the angel, and at the discussion Mary probably heard about it with her cousin Elizabeth who was six months pregnant. She became the mother of John the Baptist.

Saturday night, Rev. Dr. Alex Williams looked at the focus passage and what followed by discussing two alternative translations of what Jesus meant when he said that "This is the rock upon which I will built my church." While the common translation is that Jesus was talking about Peter but the alternate translation is that Jesus would build his church on his being called the Messiah.

Sunday morning Rev. Lamar Carney talked about the person of Pilate and his actions while Jesus was in front of him. Rev. Carney gave food for thought in discussing how Pilate went from being almost nonchalant about Jesus to being someone who wanted to let Jesus go but instead caved to political pressure.

After a wonderful meal Sunday night, Rev. Dr. Ken Meeks, who is over all the Presbyterian Church USA churches in Northeast Georgia Presbytery, discussed who Jesus is today by looking at Hebrews 11 and 12 to see how the early Christians had either denounced their faith or suffered for it, and how many chose to suffer. He then compared the church's early history with what is happening in the world today with the prosecution of Christians around the world and what we are called to do.

"All of the discussions were unique and interesting," said Rev. Glen Kohlhagen, pastor of the Washington church, "and although delivered from four different perspectives, the congregation was given the opportunity to grow, and grow they did in faith."
