Salvation Army's kettle collection schedule expanded; volunteers needed to fill slots
Music has always been an integral part of the celebration of Christmas, beginning with the singing of angels and expanding to choirs all over the world. From the lowing of cattle and bleating of sheep near the manger which held our Lord at his birth, to the mythical little drummer boy who "played his best for Him," and including some of the most-loved and universally presented compositions of all time, music is vital to the Christmas spirit. It is the universal language which transcends human limitations and conveys emotion, intent, and "good will to men" regardless of race and heritage.
As this year moves well into November, many kinds of musical presence make us increasingly aware that Christmas 2008 is almost upon us. One unmistakable reminder is the pleasant tingling of bells marking the location of a Salvation Army Christmas collection kettle. That sound is coming soon.
And for good reason.
The kettle collections are a major fund-raising effort in Washington- Wilkes for helping needy and deserving people throughout the entire year, not just during the Christmas season. The kettle collections are always supported generously, and last year the total gifts received reached a record high.
Sadly, the need for help also increased greatly and it was necessary to make an appeal for special gifts in order to meet needs before this year's Christmas campaign.
Dot Harris, treasurer for the Wilkes County Unite of the Salvation Army, reported last week that needs have been met to date, but that this year's bell-ringing schedule has been expanded to allow for additional collections.
"Our first need is for additional bell-ringing volunteers," Harris said. "Traditionally, we have begun with the annual Downtown Candlelight Shopping which is set for Tuesday, November 25, 6 to 9 p.m. This year we get an early start on Friday and Saturday, November 21-22, when the kettle will be manned from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m."
The full 19-day schedule as planned requires volunteers for 127 one-hour shifts, which is up from 113 last year. Except for one location downtown (November 25 only) the kettle will alternate between Ingles and BiLo on the dates and times listed.
Volunteer ringers are being recruited through churches, schools, civic organizations, governmental agencies, and elsewhere. Those not otherwise contacted may arrange for a convenient time by calling Dot Harris at 706-678-2818.
