Somehow, as Mike Tanner and his crew were cutting down two wonderful old (but rotten) oak trees at the Tupper-Barnett Home on Robert Toombs Avenue, he says he may, or may not have, discovered something odd in the old tree Friday afternoon. The not-so-subtle sign marking the site of the famous Wilkes County lost Confederate Gold may have been a ruse, however, to get unsuspecting passers-by to stick their faces in the hole. "The tree was calling to me," one said. "But I wasn't fooled." The new owner of the home, Beatrice Geiser, said that she loved the old trees, but experts said they were dying and hollow, and needed to come down. But the Confederate gold? "That was news to me," she said.
