Waters presents program at W-W Garden Club meeting
The Washington-Wilkes Garden Club met Thursday afternoon, November 13, at the North Wilkes Library in Tignall.
Mary Webster, president, opened the meeting by welcoming members. Paula Butts continued the opening ritual with a devotional on thankfulness. Members joined in the Pledge to the Flag.
During the business meeting a report was made on the Garden Therapy project of the Christmas stockings and the Fig Leaf project at Central State Hospitals in Milledgeville.
Members enjoyed a most interesting and informative program presented by Emilie Waters who spoke about fall holiday decorating. She displayed a table covered with burnt orange cloths and decorated with pilgrims and a runner of flowers, leaves and pumpkins. After comments about the display, she showed the ladies how to make a beautiful cornucopia using silk fall leaves, flowers, berries and pumpkins. She explained that the cornucopia is a "symbol of plenty." As she constructed this arrangement, she shared with members arranging tips and short cuts. She also related tips on how to prolong the life of freshly cut flowers. Mrs. Waters has arranged flowers and made bouquets for her daughters' weddings and related several "unforeseen" incidents which added humor to her presentation. After the arrangement was complete, a drawing was held for it and Mary Webster was the lucky recipient.
Hostesses Celeste Adams, Edna Lamar, and Mrs. Webster served delicious party foods and lime sherbet punch during a time of fellowship. The table held a beautiful arrangement using flowers from Mrs. Adams's yard that included several varieties of chrysanthemums, hydrangeas, snowball hydrangeas and greenery.
Members present were Celeste Adams, Paula Butts, Carol Daniels, Louise Harper, Mabel Johnson, Sally Kennedy, Edna Lamar, Pat Mack, Edna Rhodes, Elizabeth Smith, Genevieve Thurmond and Mary Webster. A special welcome was extended to member, Faye Durham, who was visiting from her new residence in Tennessee.
