The Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Department celebrated their league football champions, the Cowboys, at an award ceremony last week.

Enjoying pizza and trophies, the 11- to 13-year-old Cowboys were praised by Parks and Rec Director Pete Gartrell. "These are a good bunch of kids," he said. "I can't praise them enough. I just wish we had more kids in the program just like them."

The Cowboys, coached by Detric Jones, Joe Nelson, and James Jones Jr., beat out three other teams with their 5-1 record for the season.

The coaches passed out trophies at the ceremony, including the Coaches' Award, which went to Terez Norman; Deotre Milton, who won the MVP award; Honor Roll members Terez Norman, Austin Hackney, and Tremond Ferrell.

Devarious Smith earned the Best Offensive Player trophy, James Holley earned the Team Spirit Award, Antonio Harris was chosen Best Offensive Lineman and Trey James Best Defensive Player. Dalton Cordell earned the 110% Award, and Marquez Reid was named Most Improved Player.
