Christmas tree sale by Optimist Club now ongoing daily
      The Optimist Club of Washington has begun its annual Christmas tree sale. Beautiful Fraser fir trees are available this year at the club's new location across the road from McDonald's at the Washington Ford Mercury used car sales lot.

Applications for assistance program accepted Dec. 18-19
      Applications will be received on December 18 and 19 for anyone interested in participating in the Low Income Energy Assistance program in Wilkes County. Caller wanting her credit card numbers found Miss Pat to be 'nobody's fool'
      Miss Pat is nobody's fool, and she could tell the lady calling on her cell phone was up to something from the get-go. "She said her name was Cathy Wilson from E-Z 1 Rate and that I'd won a $300 gas card and free long-distance phone calls," she said. "Her accent didn't much sound like a Cathy Wilson, and the connection had funny clicks after she talked.

Pre-K kids help stock food pantry
     Students in the First United Methodist Church Pre-K delivered non-perishable items they collected last month to the Washington Food Pantry. They have been learning the importance of taking care of those in need as they have been called to do by the Lord Jesus Christ. W-WPS drive nets over 1,000 cans
     The students in Kim Bearse's homeroom collected 130 cans of food, more than any other, in the recent drive at Washington-Wilkes Primary School for donation to God's Marketplace. Over 1,040 cans were collected by the school as a whole and similar drives are also underway at the county's other three schools. The directors of God's Marketplace expressed their sincere thanks to all members of our community who are helping with this year's food drive.

State's unemployment for Oct. is highest in more than 16 years
      The Georgia Department of Labor (DOL) has reported that the unemployment rate in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) rose to a preliminary unadjusted rate of 7.7 percent in October, up 1.8 percentage points over the year from October of 2007. The jobless rate in the CSRA rose six-tenths of one percent from a revised 7.1 percent in September.

Holiday traffic, accidents lighter this year, even with the rainfall causing slick roads
      The Thanksgiving holiday travel period ended Sunday night with 15 traffic deaths reported to the Georgia State Patrol. "In our five-county area, including Elbert, Lincoln, Oglethorpe, Taliferro, and Wilkes counties, there were 201 citations given over the Thanksgiving holiday, five of which were for DUI," said Sergeant Scott Andrews of the Georgia State Patrol.

Singing for the shoppers
     The cast of "Sanders Family Christmas" serenaded the crowds of shoppers at Washington's Candlelight Shopping Tuesday night. Candlelight Shopping will return to downtown next Tuesday, Dec. 9, and the Sanders Family will open tonight at 8 p.m. at the Bolton Lunceford Playhouse and running Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. Reservations are available by phone at 706-678-9582.

JumpStart discusses 'Making Changes'
     The Wilkes County Community Partnership JumpStart Program mothers and grandmothers attended a parent support and network session on Tuesday, November 25, at the Family Resource Center on Lincoln Circle. The topic of discussion was "Making Changes." The facilitators were the JumpStart Home Parent Educators Beverly Falaise and LaShaunder Elam-Lee. JumpStart is a home parent-child education program that helps with school readiness. For more information about this program, call the JumpStart ladies at 706-678-4498. National symbol spotted here
     Cynthia Walker and family spotted this bald eagle Thanksgiving morning as they were turning off Danburg Road on the way to her parents' home in Warrenton. The eagle, she said, "was trying to get his 'feast' out of the highway. Everytime he swooped down a car would top the hill and back to the tree he would fly. I never leave home without my camera and this was one time I was glad. We all thought this was worth being a little late for our Thanksgiving feast."
