Amason, Executive Director of the Flannery O'Connor-Andalusia Foundation, Inc. of Milledgeville, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, December 2. Amason told members about the life of American novelist and short-story writer Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) of Milledgeville who wrote two novels and 32 short stories. He also described her 544-acre ancestral farm - Andalusia - near Milledgeville which is open to the public. Lillie Crowe (right) was the program host for the day. More ... Jasmine Cleveland is one of a number of students who recently finished with her Senior Project. The Senior Project at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School is an opportunity for seniors to demonstrate obtained knowledge and the capability to create and execute a task utilizing the skills developed throughout their lives as students. The project requires students to demonstrate skills in time-management, research, problem-solving, human interaction, organization, and public speaking. Completion of these projects serves as the culmination of their efforts this semester in obtaining the very skills and abilities expected of colleges and/or employers. More ... The director and several members of the cast of "Sanders Family Christmas," to be presented by the Washington Little Theater Company this week, were guest speakers and performers at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, November 25. The play's director, Jo Randall (back, second from left), told members about the upcoming play and its setting - Mt Pleasant Baptist Church, Christmas Eve of 1941. Kay Nelms (back, right) sang two songs from the play accompanied by Sherri Bowers on piano. The play will be presented December 4-7, at the Bolton Lunceford Playhouse. A popular stop at last week's Candlelight Shopping was the Wilkes County 4-H Dairy Show Team booth offering pictures taken with a Christmas calf. The calf was stationed in a well-lit manger next to the Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce, and volunteers took photos of kids (and adults) with the calf for a donation. The event was a successful fund-raiser for the Wilkes County 4-H club. More ... Members of the Wills Memorial Hospital Auxiliary sang Christmas carols before lighting its second annual Christmas Tree of Love" at last week's Candlelight Shopping on The Square. Auxiliary members received donations in memory of and in honor of loved ones to light the evergreen tree on the courthouse lawn. Proceeds from this project will fund necessary equipment for Wills Memorial Hospital. More ... |
