Christmas Bazaar set Saturday

For most of us, anticipation of the Christmas season starts immediately after Thanksgiving, if not sooner.

The days between Thanksgiving and Christmas represent holiday gatherings, shopping in earnest, plenty of good food and fellowship, and contemplation of the meaning of Christmas.

The Episcopal Church of the Mediator's Annual Christmas Bazaar and Luncheon, always held on the first weekend in December, brings together all these things. It is one of the events that marks the beginning of Christmas in Washington- Wilkes.

The bazaar-luncheon has been a tradition since the 1950s. The tradition grew out of a bridge luncheon initiated by Episcopalian parishioners to raise money. The lunch menu has varied little from year to year. Mainstays of the home-cooked meal are country ham, turkey and dressing, tomato aspic, and cornucopia of salads, vegetables, and cakes.

Items for the bazaar are different every year, but there are always familiar favorites such as candies, jellies, crafts, and baked goods. The church appreciates the fact that a group of friends attend the bazaar and luncheon every year. It is the combination of these people and newcomers that make the event special. All are welcome.

The bazaar-luncheon will be held on Saturday, December 6, with the bazaar beginning at 10:30 a.m. and the luncheon at 11:30. Cost for the luncheon is $10.00.
