Applications for assistance program accepted Dec. 18-19
      Applications will be received on December 18 and 19 for anyone interested in participating in the Low Income Energy Assistance program in Wilkes County. The program is to assist in paying utility bills. Interested persons should apply for the assistance program in Wesley Hall of the First United Methodist Church, located at 102 W. Liberty Street, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Describes recent trip to Cuba
     Gene Younts, retired from UGA and a favorite of the Washington Rotary Club, told members of his most recent trip to Cuba during the club's regular meeting on December 4. He described some of the advances the country has made since his last visit and he said that Cubans are some of the most contented people he has ever seen. Grant pays for Atlanta field trip; 2,300 cans collected in food drive
      Sixty middle school and ninth grade students enjoyed a field trip to Atlanta Saturday, December 6. In order to qualify, students wrote essays about their career aspirations. The students began their trip with a visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Visitor Center and a tour of King's birthplace, followed by dinner and shopping at Underground Atlanta.

Free legal services available Jan. 6 at Wilkes Senior Center
      The Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) provides free legal help to low-income people with civil (noncriminal) legal problems. A member of the staff from GLSP will travel to meet with people wanting free legal help in Taliaferro and Wilkes counties on the first Tuesday of each month.

     Thirty students were inducted as new members of the Washington-Wilkes Junior Beta Club last week at the school. The National Junior Beta Club was founded in 1961 for academically outstanding students in grades five through nine. Live nativity scene set December 21 at Phillips Mill, 6 p.m.
      Phillips Mill Baptist Church, 5479 Greensboro Road, will present a live nativity scene Sunday, December 21, in front of the church beginning at 6 p.m. Members of the children and youth groups of the church will be depicting the scene in the stable where the Christ Child was born. They will be using live animals.

Newcomer Bill Gillispie wins chest in Washington Lions Club raffle
      A relative newcomer to Washington Wilkes held the winning ticket Monday evening, December 1, when the Washington Lions Club awarded a prized cedar chest as the grand prize in a fund-raising project. William F. (Bill) Gillispie was declared winner by Lion President Mary Hubbard from among 1,636 entries in a random drawing during the Lions' regular weekly meeting.

      The Washington Police Department will again sponsor its annual "Gifts for Children" campaign this Christmas. "Christmas time is a wonderful time for many families; however, there are families that are in such poverty, they cannot afford to purchase gifts for their children at Christmas time," said Assistant Chief of Police Theodosia Glenn.

Training complete for CNA candidates
     Fourteen individuals have completed 95 hours of Certified Nursing Assistant instruction including clinical training at Lake Crossing Health Care and Wills Memorial Hospital. The individuals will be certified in the State of Georgia as Nursing Assistants upon the successful passing of the state examination this week at Wills Memorial Hospital.       Christmas gift shoeboxes are being delivered this week to many Wilkes County seniors, said organizer Margie Burke, but she needs help to reach everyone. "We've gotten lots of shoeboxes from groups and from individuals,'" she said. "But we need more, and soon, because we start delivering them this week.
