Sixty middle school and ninth grade students enjoyed a field trip to Atlanta Saturday, December 6. In order to qualify, students wrote essays about their career aspirations.

The students began their trip with a visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Visitor Center and a tour of King's birthplace, followed by dinner and shopping at Underground Atlanta. Afterward, the students attended the annual Morehouse/Spelman Christmas Carol concert. The trip was funded by a grant from Communities in Schools (CIS) of Georgia obtained by the Wilkes County Community Partnership to enhance connections between CIS, school graduation coaches, students and the community. The $5000 grant will also underwrite the "Career Explorations-Fields of Opportunity Day," featuring speakers and exhibitors representing various occupations on Friday, December 19, in the middle/high school gymnasium. All students in grades 6-9 will attend the event.

The middle and high school bands and the middle school chorus classes joined forces to perform a Christmas concert for a standing-room-only audience the evening of December 8. "All four groups did well, and I enjoyed going," said eighth grade student Kohen Wolfe, who attended the concert.

The middle school band and chorus classes performed again for the students at an assembly in the gym Friday morning. Following the concert, a small ensemble of teachers, staff, and administration wowed the students by singing "Jingle Bells," and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

The W-WMS Beta club sponsored a canned food drive for the holidays. Approximately 2,300 cans were collected for God's Marketplace to be donated to the needy in Wilkes County. The classes that collected the most cans were: first place - Mrs. Hall, sixth grade, with a total of over 300 cans; second place - Mrs. Gallo, eighth grade; third place - Mrs. Gay, sixth grade; and honorable mention - Mr. Dawkins, sixth grade.

In girl's basketball, the Lady Tigers played a tough game against Warren County, December 3. Lauren Chafin kept our team in the game with a three-pointer and a shot just out of the three-point line. Undrelle Grant posted her own six points and Tiare Tatum was the high scorer with 15 points. During the fourth quarter, we had a fantastic run putting 17 points on the board in six minutes. The unsuccessful attempt to take back the lead ended the game 26-30. Their last game was played on December 16.
