Caroline Durham, Audrey Fowler baptized Sunday, November 30
Caroline Bethea Durham (left) and Audrey Virginia Fowler Caroline Bethea Durham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Durham of Washington, and Audrey Virginia Fowler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Fowler of Statesboro, participated in a joint Infant Baptism Service on Sunday, November 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Washington.
The girls were presented for Infant Baptism by Mrs. Buddy Lindsey, lay leader and great-great aunt of Audrey. The ceremony was officiated by Rev. Gale Seibert, pastor.
The choir and congregation sang the hymn, "Wash, O God, Our Sons and Daughters," before the Holy Sacrament of Baptism was administered. During the service, Rev. Seibert blessed the girls with the symbols of water, oil and salt. Rev. Seibert read the prayer and blessing written especially for each little girl by Caroline's great-uncle, Rev. Wayne Johnson of Corning, Ark. As a special tribute to the infants, Tommy Wells, a close family friend, sang "The Lord's Prayer" at the conclusion of the Baptism. A shell and water drop motif christening banner that was made by the Cornelia Johnson Circle many years ago adorned the church during the worship service.
Caroline and Audrey were dressed alike in long white Sarah Louise christening gowns that featured round yokes topped by scalloped portrait collars edged with smocking and embroidered with white rosebuds about the smocked skirts that were accented with delicate rosebud embroidery and smocking above the scalloped hem. They also wore sweet matching bonnets.
After the Sunday morning service, Caroline's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Harvey Jr., and Audrey's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Lindsey, entertained family and friends at a dinner held in the new fellowship hall of the Methodist Church.
For the special event Audrey and Caroline had their own places of honor marked by large pink bows with pink and white balloon bouquets decorating their highchairs. Audrey's Grandmother Lindsey and Caroline's Grandmother Harvey surprised the girls with Madame Alexander christening dolls each wearing a silver Bible charm necklace engraved with each girl's initials and the date. Audrey's great-aunt, Debby Bender of Charleston, S.C., sent Audrey a special gift in her stead, a Charleston handkerchief christening doll that will be used again at her wedding. Caroline's mother presented her a monogrammed, hand-embroidered handkerchief as a keepsake for the special day.
Upon entering the fellowship hall, guests signed a christening keepsake page for each girl on a table covered in pink featuring two little lambs and pictures of the girls. The buffet table was covered in white damask with a pink overlay and featured a centerpiece of white rosebuds floating in three rose bowls surrounded by pink tulle and a bouquet of pink and white balloons.
Tables for guests were layered in white floor-length cloths with white damask overlays topped with pink runners. Mirrors placed on top of each table held three pillar candles entwined with pink tulle and surrounded with silver balls and white rose petals. Two small children's tables, covered in white paper with crayons and "The Lord is My Shepherd" lamb stickers entertained the lively group of little ones as they enjoyed the luncheon.
Guests were served roast beef, rice and gravy, pasta salad, green beans, rolls and tea. Desserts consisted of Red Velvet cake, caramel cake, brownies and chocolate chip cookies. A special treat on the dessert table was the "Durham Family Chocolate Layer Cake" baked by Caroline's grandmother, Mrs. Joe Durham, especially for the occasion.
