Fire damages Pliant warehouse; no injuries reported in Mon. fire Washington firefighters responded to a firein the Pliant Corp. warehouse Monday morning that caused smoke and water damage to the former Persimmon Homes plant off the Lexington Road in Washington. Capt. Kevin Tucker said that a fireignited in rolls of plastic and the building's sprinkler system went off, knocking down the worst of the fire. Fire fighters from Engine 2, Engine 5, Ladder 3 and the department's air truck responded to the 7:37 a.m. call and put out the smoldering plastic, then set to work ridding the large warehouse of smoke and water. City of Washington workers turned off the power, and firefighters worked for some four hours to clean the smoke and water out of the building. The building, which formerly housed the Persimmon Homes plant, is owned by the Washington Wilkes Payroll Development Authority and is leased to Pliant for warehousing.
No estimate of damages were available at press time.
