RAYLE NEWS
By Bonnie Boatwright Call 274-3264

I hope all of you had a wonderful and safe Christmas and the new year will be a happy and healthy one. .Earlier this year I wrote in my column about Mrs. Katie Sherrer Goolsby being in a very bad automobile accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. After a long stay in the hospital in Athens she now resides at the Heritage Nursing Home on Hawthorne Avenue in Athens. The Johnson United Methodist Church in Watkinsville that she attended and is a member of had a Christmas cantata Sunday, December 16. Friends and members of the church made a dream come true for Miss Katie when they got together and brought her to the cantata in a van on a stretcher and rolled her to the front of the church so she could see and enjoy the program. Miss Katie enjoyed this very much and was so thankful for her friends who made this possible. Miss Katie is a cousin of Marvin (Bo) and Blanche Armour of Washington and also related to James Sherrer of Lundberg. Mrs. Bob (Carole Johnson) Murphy is pianist and choir director of the church. Carole is Mrs. Mable Johnson's daughter. .We had a good service at Sardis Baptist Church Sunday morning, December 23. The advent candle "Love" was lighted by Preston and Joyce Fry, Jazmine and Jeremiah. Pam Hall led in the singing of beautiful Christmas hymns with Courtney Gunter at the piano. The children gathered at he altar where Pastor Jim Newsome had a message for them after which they went downstairs to the annex for children's church with Denise Armour. The inspiring message by Pastor Newsome was "Giving to our Savior." .Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. was prayer meeting at the Echols Home. You are welcome to come out on Wednesday evenings for these inspirational meetings. .Sunday morning, December 30, Monica Gunter led in the singing of more Christmas hymns with Pam Hall as pianist. The children again gathered at the altar for the children's message by Pastor Jim Newsome. After this they went downstairs for the church with Trey Berry. Pastor Newsome brought a wonderful message, "Jesus is the Greatest Gift of All," from II Corinthian 9:15. The Lord's Supper was then served by the deacons. Clifford and Janet Boatwright of Valdese, N.C., were welcomed as visitors. The church was still beautifully decorated for Christmas. The vestibule had an angel tree where donations were made to the Lottie Moon Mission in honor or in memory of someone you loved. The goal of $1,000 has been met with donations still being made. ."An Old Fashioned Christmas" was presented at Sardis Baptist Church by the children and young people Sunday evening, December 23. A prelude of music was by Rebekah Echols, Courtney Gunter, and Meredith Gunter. A poem, "Twas the Night before Christmas, not a sign of Baby Jesus," was read by Hunter Armour and Anthony Echols. Others assisting with the program were Courtney Gunter and Jessica Murphy. Afterwards everyone went to the annex for delicious finger foods and fellowship.
