Animal Shelter needs contributions, volunteers

TO THE EDITOR:

This is the time of the year when the Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter funds run out.

Gloria Wheatley, our shelter manager, has done tremendous work finding excellent rescue groups to findapproved homes. Due to her efforts, the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine has adopted our shelter to help with spaying and neutering.

But there is a waiting time. Animals must have shelter, be fed, vaccinated, and sometimes veterinary care, before being accepted.

The shelter wish list includes the following items: cleaning supplies, bleach, laundry soap, etc.; old towels and blankets; carpet remnants for the dog beds; food dishes, stainless steel, non-spillable for dogs and cats; kitty litter; cat toys, washable, no cat nip; puppy and kitten foods, treats for dogs and cats; and dog houses.

Here's the big one: volunteers to socialize and walk the dogs. A little kindness makes a big difference for a happier, better pet.

The shelter needs sponsors for a dog or cat. Monetary donations are very much appreciated.

The animals count on us. We welcome new members. Contributions and membership applications can be mailed to Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 121, Washington 30673.
