'Work Ready' gives local workers a better chance to get good jobs

Wilkes County workers who want to get an edge when they apply for a job will soon have a new tool available to show employers they know their stuff.

A nationwide assessment tool called "Work Keys" will be made available to all workers who are willing to be assessed, Washington- Wilkes Chamber of Commerce Director Donna Hardy said. "It's not a test, but an assessment that tells an employer what your abilities are in a certain area."

The assessment is free for anyone who would like to take it.

The Work Ready assessment measures three different areas: applied math, reading for information, and locating information. "You get a score of 1 to 5 in each of the three different areas, and no one will be aware of your score but you and Athens Tech," she said.

After receiving their scores from Athens Tech, workers can attach the Work Ready certificateto their resume when applying for a job.

"This assessment gives you an edge when you apply for a job," Hardy said. "The employer immediately knows your capabilities in each of these three areas. Work Keys is a nationally recognized assessment tool among employers and makes it easier for employers to make hiring decisions. So sign up now to have your free assessment and receive your score so you can attach it to your resume."

How do workers take the assessment? "It's very simple. We've lined up an overview of this whole process for you on Thursday evening, January 17, at Washington- Wilkes Comprehensive High School from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Just come on over and we will explain everything to you."

The actual assessment will be given on Saturday, January 19, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. "Each section only takes 55 minutes but there are breaks between the sections and snacks will be served. Please call now to reserve you a place at the overview and assessment - space is limited."

There is no charge for any part of the assessment.

Governor Sonny Perdue started the Work Ready initiative last year, Hardy said, and Wilkes County was chosen as an accelerated county last fall because of the efforts of the local committee. "We've received $35,000 grant to assist with local efforts in getting our county 'Work Ready.' Now we're ready to go to work at getting the community ready for any new industry or employers that come our way."
