A big annual parade will cap events planned in Washington to observe the birthday of Martin Luther King the weekend of January 19.

The United Community Awareness Program (UCAP) has planned its annual Martin Luther King Celebration, starting with the 5th annual Unity Prayer Breakfast Saturday, January 19, with Mayor Willie Burns as guest speaker. The Martin Luther King Speech Contest awards will also be given out.

The breakfast will be held at Third Shiloh Center at 9 a.m. on McLendon Drive. Tickets are $6 each.

On Sunday, January 20, at 3:30 p.m., Pastor L.V. Turman and Faith Christian will render the service at Springfield Baptist Church.

The celebration will conclude Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. with the annual parade down Whitehall Street. Participants are asked to line up at the back of the high school at noon. The parade will proceed down Hospital Drive and up Whitehall Street to The Pope Center.

There is an parade entry fee of $5. Groups planning to participate should contact Rachel Jackson at 706-678-7183 or 706-318-6873, or Adrienne Anderson at 706-678-5499 or 706-401-5861 by January 12.
