Salvation Army bell ringers' efforts net $5,825; most will be reserved for use in Wilkes County
Of that total, 80 percent ($4,660.58) will be kept for use in Wilkes County and 20 percent ($1,165.14) will be sent to Salvation Army Headquarters in Atlanta for Salvation Army work around the world. The 2007 amount given was $80.97 above the 2006 total. There were 114 people of various occupations, civic clubs, and religious denominations who rang the Salvation Army Christmas bells this year. They rang for a total of 113 hours on 17 days. Commander of the Wilkes County Unit of the Salvation Army, Rev. Albert Huyck, has expressed appreciation for the bell ringers who gave generously of their time and the hundreds of donors who gave generously of their money. He also expressed appreciation to Bi Lo and Ingles stores for the privilege of having bell ringers at their locations. Appreciation was also expressed to Mrs. Harris for arranging the schedules and keeping the records, to Mrs. Gene Land for clerical work, and to Smythe Newsome for publicity. The Wilkes County Unit of the Salvation Army helps people of Wilkes County with emergency needs on a limited basis. Last year 108 cases were helped. The Christmas bell ringing is the major source of funds.
Contributions during the year may be send to: Wilkes County Salvation Army Unit, 509 North Alexander Avenue, Washington, Georgia 30673.
