Reese Booker Scholarships awards $1,600 to 11 Wilkes college students

The Reese J. Booker Scholarship Committee awarded $1,600 in certificatesto 11 college students on December 23 at the Reese J. Booker Scholarship program held at Marks Tabernacle Baptist Church, Washington.

The Reese J. Booker Scholarship Bonus Certificatewas presented to Evangelist Katrina Owen, valued at $500.

The 10 college students who were presented the regular scholarship certificates valued at $100 each were Monique Binns, Samuel Daniel, Justene Le-Trese Anderson, Darrieat Dubose, Michael Wylie, Larry Davis Jr., Henry (Jake) Gresham, Arthur Watts, Clifford Hanson II, Khiry Tutt, and Rev. Lance Pitts.

To redeem the certificates,each student is asked to go to theie college registrar's officeand ask for a statement or letter stating that he or she is currently enrolled in college. The letter should have the college letterhead, a seal stamped with the college's name, and the signature of the registrar. The date must be current as of January 2008. "No 2007 letter will be accepted," says Clara Sutton, chairman of the committee.

The pay-off date to redeem the scholarship certificatesis January 26, 2008, (the fourth Saturday in January), at 10 a.m., at Sutton's Hair Center, 409B Lexington Avenue. If for some reason the recipients cannot redeem their certificateson January 26, the next pay-off date will be February 9 at the same location and time. If the certificatesare not redeemed by then, the money will be returned to the scholarship fund to help other students, Sutton said.

Participating on the program were Anita Rolland, worship leader; Deacons Leroy Owen, Huis Randall, and Bennie Willis, devotional; and Mrs. Mattie Hanson, scripture. The welcome was given by Huis Randall, and Clara Sutton gave the purpose of the program. Songs of inspiration were rendered by Cherry Grove, New Sutton's Temple, Samuel Daniel, and Springfield'scommunity choir.

Remarks about Reese Booker were given by Samuel (Ed) Jenkins and Mayor Willie Burns. Mrs. Carrie Gresham introduced the guest minister, Brenda Nunnally, a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church. Evangelist Nunnally's sermon was titled "Overcoming Temptation," taken from I Corinthians 10:13.

More than $1,000 was raised for the fund.

Anyone who is interested in making a donation to the fund should make checks payable to Reese J. Booker Scholarship Fund and mail it c/o Clara Sutton, P.O. Box 261, Washington 30673.
