A reminder of a miscellaneous bridal shower for Amanda McAvoy this Saturday morning, January 12, at Phillips Mill Baptist Church, 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Please feel welcome to attend. .Happy birthday wishes to Grace Mathis Beazley of the Carter's Grove community who will celebrate her 92nd birthday Saturday, January 12. Also happy birthday Saturday to Dan McAvoy who will be 87. They both grew up at Phillips Mill. .Visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Dan McAvoy and Jerry McAvoy over the New Year holidays included several of Mr. Dan's cousins, Ruby Ray Chafin and her sister, Sara Ray Chandler, and her husband, Raymond; nephew, Henry McAvoy, and his great-nephew, Adam Howard; daughter Dorothy Ann Saxon, and friend, Gloria Thornton Hardy. .Holiday guests of Laura Shedd West and daughter Hope included the other children, Tracy Moore, Valerie and her husband, D.J. Wheeler, and their children, Mason and Madison. They were happy to have D.J.'s parents, Fred and Brenda Wheeler, sister Brittany, and brother David of Greensboro to join them for Christmas Day. On New Year's Day, Laura and children were happy to have her mother, Nell Shedd, and grandson, Troy Brown, join them for breakfast. .Marion and Joyce West were happy to have his mother, Mabel Chafin West, 95, to join them and their children, Sheldon West, his children, Noah and Fallon; Tommy and Karen Pate West, for Christmas Day. .Friends and relatives of Sonny Callaway of Monroe are glad to hear that he got to return home for Christmas after being in the hospital after falling out of a pecan tree. He was able to attend church during the holidays and will continue home therapy. Shows that a lot of people who grew up in our area are "tuff" -- ha! .Among others who grew up in Phillips Mill Church causing friends and relatives quite a scare recently was Carolyn Bridges Burnam who had the experience of a ruptured appendix. She managed to drive herself to Wills Memorial Hospital where they kept her overnight and transferred her to the Thomson hospital where Dr. Joe Wills operated on her. She was in ICU a few days before being able to return home. She was able to drive some during the holidays. Then there was Genelle "Punk" Lunceford Gill, wife of Oliver Gill, who had to have one of her legs removed above the knee. Everything went well enough for her to return to Harper's Personal Care where she has been a while in Washington. They both are in good spirits and praising God for family and friends and His everlasting love. .Morrison and Priscilla Maxwell enjoyed having their cousin, Betty Ann West, and several of her grandchildren, Alexis and Allison Stone (children of Tricia West and George Stone), to stop by Sunday afternoon. My! How the girls have grown. They have a younger sister and brother, twins, Katie and George Jr., sometimes called Captain George. Twins seem to run in the Johnson and West families. Readers might be interested to know that Wilkes County has recently had a new tour guide made of historic Wilkes County. It is super. Among the pictures is one of a good hunting and fishing area which shows a father and son out hunting. Well, it is none other than our Tyrone George Stone and his son George Jr. in their hunting clothes and with guns. Among other pictures is a picture of Kettle Creek Battleground, called "War Hill" in the Tyrone community where the Revolutionary War of 1779 took place. A special event is held each year in February at no charge. Signs are along Hwy 44 near Griffin's Store. Thanks to all who had a part in putting the guide together. They can be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce officeon The Square. .Belated happy birthday wishes to Ashley West who turned 16 on January 3. She is the daughter of Tracey and Robert Jordan "Bobby" West Jr. of Phillips Mill. She enjoys sports and has marched in a number of Washington parades. .Remember. God loves you.
