Learning in Retirement sets several courses for winter and spring The Washington Chapter of Learning In Retirement, Inc., begins its winter and spring courses with a popular geographic topic and speaker from its fall series. Gene Allison came to know China and the Chinese through his work of several years with Rockwell International in Shanghai. His special interest includes the cities of Xi'an, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Guilin, most of which have served as capital cities and are over 2,000 years old. Hangzhou, considered by Marco Polo as the most beautiful paradise city in the world, will be described by Dr. Joe Harris who spent several days there as guest of the Chinese Electron Microscopy Society. The courses are scheduled for three Tuesdays in January, January 15, 22, and 29, at 2 p.m., in the Mary Willis Library. A two-course series by Dr. Mark Waters will track the Confederate Treasury to Washington (Ga.) from Richmond, Virginia, and the theft of $250,000 in gold and silver coins. This piece of intriguing history was recently published in The Surratt Courier. In two additional sessions, he will describe activities of John Wilkes Booth and the Lincoln assassination conspirators in their attempt to escape. These courses are scheduled for Mondays, February 11, 18, and 24, 2-4 p.m., in the Mary Willis Library. "Selected Topics in Aging" are brought to Washington by Dr. Leonard Poon who holds several professorships at the University of Georgia and is also Director of the Institute of Gerontology. He will use modules designed for health professionals as a basis for both basic information and for feedback criticism of these new units. He will offer this course in March on dates to be announced. Peggy Barnett will lead courses on "Writing About Your Life, II" in April. This is a sequel to a course given a year ago and is brought back because of its popularity though it assumes no special preparation. The dates are April 7 and 14 at 2 p.m. in the Mary Willis Library. Mrs. Barnett has degrees from the University of North Carolina and the University of Delaware, and retired from the Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School.
