Tigers win first region game, beat Putham 47-39 Tuesday

TIGER SENIOR LUCIOUS STEWART LOOKS GOALWARD He led W-W to a 71-58 win over Lincoln County with 16 points.
Following a short spell of frustration in mid-December, the Washington Wilkes Tiger basketball team has bounced back with a four-game winning streak going into the region schedule which began Tuesday, January 7, at Putnam County.

(Details of the win over Putnam will be reported next week.)

Coming off a comfortable 51-36 over the Georgia Military Bulldogs on December 18, the Tigers entered the Evans Christmas Tournament December 27-28. Unfortunately, a first-round 61-67 loss to AAA Harlem put W-W in the losers' bracket. Undaunted, the Tigers returned to the court and took satisfying wins in their next two games.

Against Jefferson County and former W-W Tiger Coach Greg Freeman, the win was "kind of sweet," according to now Head Coach Don Keiser. W-W won that game 67-57 and followed with a 50-46 decision over Aquinas.

"We had them by a lot more," Keiser said, "and they had me scared for a minute."

When regular schedule play resumed last Saturday, January 5, against Lincoln County's Red Devils, the Tigers enjoyed an easy romp to victory with four players scoring in double figures.

"We had Lincolnton by 26 with 3:40 to go in the third," Keiser said, "but we ended up winning by 71-58 - they hit three 3-pointers against my B-team."

In double figures for the Lincoln game were Lucious Stewart with 16 points (plus a dozen rebounds and eight assists), Scotty Long with 15 (and seven boards), Jarekus Bowman with 13 (plus fiveassists), and Dede Stewart with 12 (and four assists).

The bad news from the Lincoln County game is that, during the game's final 3:40 when the B-team took the court, Matson Keiser reinjured his back and is out of commission indefinitely.

Earlier in the day, the Tiger boys B-team also beat up on its Lincoln County counterpart 51-40. Very even scoring among its fivestarters made for a great game, Keiser reported.

Desmond Jackson was out front with 11 points, followed by Taverrius Jones and Eric Scott with nine points each, and Neko Jones and Matson Keiser with eight points each.

This weekend, the Tigers will travel to Oglethorpe County on Friday, January 11 before returning home to host Georgia Military on Saturday. Next Tuesday, January 15, the team will remain at home for a region match-up with Greene County.
